The work he did at Cidade Jardim is colorful and a far cry from the usual Christmas fare. The mall told ANBA that Castelbajac drew his cue from the colors and the joy of Brazil. “I feel inspired by the joy and the colors of this year. This is what Christmas is about here. You don’t need to follow the tradition of Nordic countries,” Castelbajac said.

His creations hark back to a playful realm, incorporating colors and shapes from French landmarks, like the Eiffel Tower, which converse with Christmas characters. Ribbons with messages of love and optimism dangle from the mall’s cooling fans, nearly touching people’s heads.

<

Escalators were enveloped with colors, designs and words. Castelbajac designed a giant Christmas tree to welcome visitors at the entrance to the mall. The elevators have been enclosed in hoarding depicting Christmas characters.

Castelbajac travelled to Brazil late last November and delivered a performance about his work on the roof of the mall. He also attended the Gala Brazil Foundation dinner, where he donated his L’eternel Retour, a portrait of Italian muse Anna Piaggi. The fundraising dinner is held every year by BrazilFoundation.

The mall told ANBA that it went for a fun, colorful Christmas and tried to get away from the usual snowmen, which are not a Brazilian reality. “Jean-Charles de Castelbajac’s Christmas is closer to children’s hearts, since it’s more playful and joyous. This partnership between the mall and the artist was unprecedented.”

<

Castelbajac captured the mall’s attention because he’s an iconic, internationally-known name whose adventurous work can break the paradigms of traditional Christmas decoration. “For the first time, the work of an international artist can be seen and experienced by people for free at a Brazilian mall. “This is unheard of,” the mall said.

Jean-Charles de Castelbajac was born in Casablanca and completed his studies in France, where he still lives. He has designed outfits for pop icons of the likes of Beyoncé and Lady Gaga. He started his career in his family’s fashion business. The first collection he designed, in the 1970s, featured a coat made from a cut-up blanket. It spurred debate and made an industry legend out of him. He’s known for his fun-oriented work and pop art references.

From the Newsroom*

Press Release

The Casablanca-born, French-based designer and fine artist Jean-Charles de Castelbajac decorated one of the Brazilian city’s most exclusive malls with fun artistic items.

[89

0":"post-148929","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-culture
The Casablanca-born, French-based designer and fine artist Jean-Charles de Castelbajac decorated one of the Brazilian city’s most exclusive malls with fun artistic items.
["GET
