Brasília – President Michel Temer signed this Monday (5) a decree creating the temporary document National Migration Register to be issued to foreigners that enter Brazil seeking asylum while they await a decision by the Brazilian government. At the same occasion, the government launched also the pilot project of the Identity National Document (DNI), a digital document that should merge the civil registries, such as RG (General Registry), CPF (Individual Taxpayer Registration Number) and voter ID. <\/p>\n
“Now, the applicant will be issued a document that will give him access to the Work Permit, CPF, and the choice of opening a bank account. It’s a measure that strengthens the status of those that are vulnerable,” said Temer on the document for the refugees.<\/p>\n
According to the Attorney General, Raquel Dodge, in Brazil, almost 10,000 people, from 82 nationalities, sought asylum in 2016, with this number climbing three-fold in 2017, when 33,000 refugees registered at the Federal Police. Dodge pointed out that there are near 92,000 active asylum requests in the country. <\/p>\n
