This was the fifth straight month of growth, which has totaled 3.5% since April. These data are from the Survey of Employment and Salaries in Industry, released today (19) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).<\/P><br \/> <P>The number of new jobs in industry in September was 3.5% higher than in September, 2003. The heftiest contributions came from S\u00e3o Paulo (2.2%) and Minas Gerais (7.4%).<\/P><br \/> <P>Between January and September, employment growth was 1.1% higher than during the same period last year. The biggest contributions came from Minas Gerais (4.0%), and the North and Center-West regions (3.8%), offsetting negative results in Rio de Janeiro (-3.4%), Esp\u00edrito Santo (-2.0%), and Pernambuco (-1.4%).<\/P><br \/> <P>In terms of sectors, new hires were greatest in machinery and equipment (13.7%), food and beverages (2.6), and means of transportation (5.8%).
