Sharjah is this year\u2019s guest of honor for the event. \u201cCultural exchange is the primary tool for enhancing ties [between countries]. These are relations which overcome the distance and which are lasting, because they bring out the best in each country,\u201d said the CEO of the Sharjah Department of Government Relations, Fahim Al Qasimi, in his address at Anhembi Convention Center.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_198659\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-198659\" style=\"width: 350px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/2-1.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-198659\" src=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/2-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"233\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-198659\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fahim Al Qasimi: cultural interchange the key to lasting relations<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Qasimi is heading a numerous delegation from the emirate at the Biennial. During the Fair \u2013 which opened this Friday (3) and will continue until the 12<sup>th<\/sup> \u2013, the emirate will present over <a href=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/en\/40-translations-arabic-launched-biennial\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">40 books<\/a> translated from Arabic into Portuguese. It will also feature cultural activities including reading sessions with authors, folk music concert and handicraft workshops.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLiterature is the result of our experiences, converted into book form,\u201d said Qasimi. He believes books overcome the distance between peoples. Sharjah is considered the cultural capital of the United Arab Emirates, and according to Qasimi, the country values its cultural relations with Brazil and other countries and intends to advance them further. \u201cWe want strong, true relatins,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The head of the Arab delegation heaped praise on Brazilian literature and said it has \u201cleft its mark in global literature.\u201d \u201cBrazilian literature has a special identity to it that\u2019s recognized worldwide,\u201d he asserted.<\/p>\n<p><strong>First time<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_198635\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-198635\" style=\"width: 350px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/sharjahbienal2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-198635\" src=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/sharjahbienal2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"233\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-198635\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Arab lute player slated to perform this Friday<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lu\u00eds Antonio Torelli, the president of the Brazilian Book Chamber (CBL), which holds the Biennial, said Brazil\u2019s publishing industry is undertaking international promotion actions in partnership with the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex-Brasil). \u201cThis is the time a Middle Eastern city is the Biennial\u2019s guest of honor, he pointed out.<\/p>\n<p>He also said that during the event, Sharjah will showcase its traditions and \u201call of its cultural heritage.\u201d Torelli said the emirate has been named the 2019 World Book Capital by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and that it created the first free zone for the publishing industry.<\/p>\n<p>He believes that having Sharjah join the Biennial \u201cbuilds a connection with our readers and enhances the connection between our publishers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>S\u00e3o Paulo mayor Bruno Covas was also in attendance. He said he hopes Sharjah\u2019s being at the event will lead not only to increased Brazil-UAE exchange, but also to S\u00e3o Paulo-Sharjah ties, since both cities place great value and are home to numerous cultural facilities \u2013 like museums, theaters and movie theaters \u2013 and events, like exhibitions and biennial book fairs.<\/p>\n<p>Brazil\u2019s Culture minister S\u00e9rgio S\u00e1 Leit\u00e3o closed the ceremony. \u201cI would like to salute the entire delegation from Sharjah, which actively supports culture and creative economy, especially books,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_198637\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-198637\" style=\"width: 350px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/sharjahbienal.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-198637\" src=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/sharjahbienal.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"233\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-198637\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Some of the delegates from Sharjah<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Also in attendance were the president of Brazil\u2019s National Fund for the Development of Education (FNDE), S\u00edlvio de Sousa Pinheiro; the president of the Social Fund for Solidarity of the State of S\u00e3o Paulo and governor\u2019s wife, L\u00facia Fran\u00e7a; the director of the Regional Department of the Social Service of Commerce in S\u00e3o Paulo (SESC-SP), Danilo Santos de Miranda;
