Al-Azhar is Egypt\u2019s premier Islamic religious institution and one of the most traditional and respected in the world. Shuman is second in line in the organization\u2019s hierarchy. Late on Monday afternoon (6), he visited the <strong>Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce<\/strong>, in S\u00e3o Paulo, where he was welcomed by president Rubens Hannun and other board members.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_198799\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-198799\" style=\"width: 350px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/shuman5.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-198799\" src=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/shuman5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"233\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-198799\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Shuman: halal certification is reassuring to Arab consumers<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI have been invited by Fambras (the Federation of Muslim Associations in Brazil) to visit Brazil in order to advance our ties with Islamic organizations in the country,\u201d Shuman said. Fambras is one of the halal certifying bodies in Brazil, meaning it ensures goods have been made in accordance with Muslim tradition.<\/p>\n<p>Besides visiting Fambras and the Arab Chamber, he will go to a meat packer on Tuesday (7) to see halal slaughter taking place. \u201cWe are aware that Brazil is one of the leading animal protein producers in the world, and our certification must have credibility,\u201d Shuman said. According to him, the visits, and a positive assessment from Al-Azhar, will guarantee Brazil continues to trade in meats with Egypt. \u201cThis will give confidence to Arab and Muslim consumers,\u201d he argued.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_198801\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-198801\" style=\"width: 350px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/shuman2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-198801\" src=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/shuman2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"233\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-198801\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The ambassador (C) underscored his good standing with the Arab Chamber<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Shuman visited the Arab Chamber alongside the ambassador of Egypt to Bras\u00edlia, Alaaeldin Roushdy; the head of Egypt\u2019s commercial office in S\u00e3o Paulo, consul Mohamed Elkhati; and Fambras president Mohamed Zoghbi.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI made a point of bringing his eminence to the Arab Chamber so he could have a close look at the cooperation in place between the Embassy and the Chamber,\u201d the ambassador said. \u201cAl-Azhar is responsible for the religious aspect of halal. That is why it\u2019s important to show him both of the parties that handle the matter,\u201d he said, in a reference to the religious and technical work done by Fambras, including poultry and cattle slaughter, and the work of the Arab Chamber, which issues certificates of origin, export papers and commercial promotion. \u201cWith the visit tomorrow [to the meat packing\u00a0facilities], his eminence will look at the technical aspects, how slaughter is carried out, and this will give him an overview of the entire process,\u201d Roushdy concluded.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_198803\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-198803\" style=\"width: 350px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/shuman6.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-198803\" src=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/shuman6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"233\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-198803\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hannun: the Chamber is the eyes of Arabs in Brazil<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>To that end, Hannun said: \u201cI can assure his eminence of the Arab Chamber\u2019s impartial role of being the eyes of Arabs in Brazil and the eyes of Brazilians in the Arab countries.\u201d The Chamber is the only Brazilian organization accredited by the Union of Arab Chambers, the business arm of the League of Arab States, to certify the export of goods to Arab countries. \u201cI would also like to say we sustain very good relations with the ministries of Agriculture in both Egypt and Brazil,\u201d said Hannun.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_198804\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-198804\" style=\"width: 350px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/shuman4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-198804\" src=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/shuman4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"233\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-198804\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alaby: the Chamber checks 26 items before certifying papers<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Beef is the top-selling product from Brazil to Egypt, with sales fetching USD 246 million in H1, up 19.6% year-on-year according to numbers from the Brazilian Ministry of Industry, Foreign Trade and Services. Poultry exports from Brazil to Egypt in the first seven months of 2018 reached USD 34 million, down 76.6% year-on-year.<\/p>\n<p>Arab Chamber CEO Michel Alaby explained that in order for export papers to be certified, 26 different items are checked, including halal certification. \u201cWe will not accept halal certification unless religious authorities tell us that the certifier is legally permitted [in the destination country],\u201d the executive said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_198806\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-198806\" style=\"width: 350px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/shuman3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-198806\" src=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/shuman3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"233\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-198806\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chohfi: Egypt was the first Arab country to establish diplomatic ties with Brazil<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Arab Chamber International Relations vice president Osmar Chohfi pointed out that relations with Egypt are key to Brazil. \u201cEgypt has always been an important partner of Brazil\u2019s in the Arab world. It was the first Arab country Brazil established diplomatic ties with, in 1922,\u201d said Chohfi, an ambassador by trade and a former secretary-general to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a position equivalent to deputy minister of Foreign Affairs. \u201cIt is especially important for the Arab Chamber to welcome a delegation from one of the oldest universities in the world,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Besides being the leading Islamic religious authority in Egypt, Al-Azhar is also an educational institution which provides everything from basic education to postgraduate programs. \u201cAnd we do not offer only religious courses. We have 86 faculties, some of which teach religious subjects, but others teach sciences, medicine, engineering, pharmacy and all of the modern subjects,\u201d Shuman explained.
