{"id":199677,"date":"2018-08-22T14:47:18","date_gmt":"2018-08-22T17:47:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/?p=199677"},"modified":"2018-08-23T20:22:17","modified_gmt":"2018-08-23T23:22:17","slug":"exhibit-manaus-traces-back-lebanese-artists-memories","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/en\/exhibit-manaus-traces-back-lebanese-artists-memories\/","title":{"rendered":"Exhibit in Manaus traces back Lebanese artist\u2019s memories"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>S\u00e3o Paulo \u2013 Venue Casar\u00e3o de Ideias in Manaus, Amazonas is hosting a digital collage exhibition that traces back the memories of Lebanese photographer Jacques Menassa, opening at 7 pm on Thursday (23). <em>M\u00e9moire Fixe<\/em> features photo collages by Menassa, who was born in Lebanon \u2013 where he lives presently \u2013 but spent time living in Brazil\u2019s Amazonas and Rio de Janeiro states as well as in France.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_199672\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-199672\" style=\"width: 380px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-199672\" src=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/menassafoto1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"380\" height=\"253\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-199672\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Poet Gibran Khalil Gibran is depicted in Menassa&#8217;s imagse<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The exhibition\u2019s focal point is Menassa\u2019s arrival in Amazonas, in 1984, but works covering different times in his life are also included, like his three years studying and five years working in France, interspersed with trips to Lebanon, and life in his home country. He spent two one-year and one eight-year period in Brazil, before relocating to Lebanon in 1998.<\/p>\n<p>One of the collages features Brazilian symbols, like a native man alongside pictures of TV presenter Xuxa, Coca-Cola and a VW Beetle, all of which used to national icons. The rivers, boats and colors of Amazonas and Rio de Janeiro\u2019s beaches are also portrayed, as are the Lebanese writer and artist Gibran Khalil Gibran and iconic Lebanese singer Fairuz.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_199674\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-199674\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-199674\" src=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/menassafoto2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"260\" height=\"173\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-199674\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Menassa (photo) has lived in three different countries<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Over 40 pieces will be on show at Casar\u00e3o de Ideias. The collages were made using computer software. Menassa argues that collage enables a different kind of mind-world relationship. \u201cThis iconoclastic aspect gives you total freedom, enables you to take any steps, fuels all sorts of audacity and transgression,\u201d press material quotes the artist as saying.<\/p>\n<p>Menassa first went to Manaus to see relatives who lived there. The region captivated him, and he decided to move in.\u00a0 Although he has been back in Lebanon for 18 years now, he visited Manaus once a year for the last three years. The landscapes of the city of Manaus and the Amazon rainforest are a constant source of inspiration for his photos.<\/p>\n<p>The photographer is currently a resident of Ghosta, north of Beirut, the city he was born in. Photography is not his primary occupation \u2013 he owns a business. The holder of degrees in Political Science and Business Administration, Menassa also studied photography in Lebanon\u2019s Holy Spirit University of Kaslik (Usek). His work on the Brazilian Amazon has been featured in several exhibitions in Lebanon.<\/p>\n<p>As of next Monday (27), Jacques Menassa will teach a free one-week photography workshop at the venue.
