S\u00e3o Paulo \u2013 Brazil will be one of the co-sponsors of \u201cRoad to Marrakech\u201d, a side event<\/a> to the UN General Assembly scheduled for this Wednesday (26), in New York (picture above)<\/em>. It\u2019s a preparatory event to the Intergovernmental Conference that will take place in December, in the Moroccan city, to discuss the global situation of migrants and refugees.<\/p>\n

Brazil\u2019s Permanent Mission in the UN is a co-sponsor of this side event, alongside the missions from Bahrain, Canada, Germany, Indonesia, Mexico, Philippines, Rwanda, Turkey and the host country Morocco, according to the UN\u2019s website. The UN General Assembly began its annual meeting this Tuesday (25), with heads of state of member countries.<\/p>\n

With the organization of the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for International Migration (SRSG), the preparatory meeting will begin at 2 pm of this Wednesday, at Conference Room 2, at UN\u2019s headquarters, in New York. Brazil\u2019s Foreign Minister, Aloysio Nunes, will be attending the event.<\/p>\n

The event aims to encourage participation of the countries at the highest political level in the Moroccan conference and build a bridge between the end of negotiations in July and the conference in December. According to the UN, governments will be able to highlight their ongoing initiatives or those they foresee as means of implementing the global agreement.<\/p>\n

According to the United Nations, \u201cthe event will mobilize Member States and other concerned actors to come to Marrakech ready to think creatively, share initiatives and make commitments, including through partnerships, in the spirit of international cooperation which is at the heart of the Global Compact.\u201d<\/p>\n

The conference in Marrakech<\/a> is scheduled for December 10 and 11 and aims for UN member countries to adopt the text of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration<\/a>. This will be the first global agreement designed to better manage international migration, for the benefit of all states and communities, and with the rights of all migrants at the fore.<\/p>\n

This Wednesday\u2019s side event will be moderated by the UN special representative for International Migration, Louise Arbor. According to the UN, the countries co-sponsoring the event will lead in presenting their actions to implementing the Global Compact.<\/p>\n
