{"id":202772,"date":"2018-10-16T18:00:34","date_gmt":"2018-10-16T21:00:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/?p=202772"},"modified":"2019-06-30T16:59:35","modified_gmt":"2019-06-30T19:59:35","slug":"usp-to-host-2nd-international-conference-on-palestine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/en\/usp-to-host-2nd-international-conference-on-palestine\/","title":{"rendered":"University of S\u00e3o Paulo to host 2nd Conference on Palestine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>S\u00e3o Paulo \u2013 The University of S\u00e3o Paulo (USP)\u2019s Center for Arab Studies and Institute for International Relations will host the 2<sup>nd<\/sup> International Conference on the Palestinian Issue \u2013 Oslo at 25: The Elusive Peace. Discussions will address the peace agreements reached in Norway\u2019s capital 25 years ago by then-Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) president Yasser Arafat and Israeli prime minister Yitzhak Rabin, brokered by United States president Bill Clinton. The Conference takes place on October 22 and 23.<\/p>\n<p>The goal is to trace back history, discuss the legacy and ponder the future of peace in Middle East. \u201cWe want to go over the problems and the shortcomings that have caused this agreement to fail,\u201d said USP Arab History professor Arlene Clemesha, who\u2019s one of the event\u2019s organizers <em>(pictured above on the right during the Conference\u2019s 1<sup>st<\/sup> edition)<\/em>. Abuzayd; Funda\u00e7\u00e3o Get\u00falio Vargas International Law professor Salem Nasser; and Palestinian diplomat and former PLO ambassador to Russia Afif Safieh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe wish to create a space for the sharing of information on the Middle East peace issue, with in-depth discussions, and to show people what really matters if we are to reach peaceful solutions. We\u2019ll also see how the Brazilian society thinks and where it stands regarding this conflict,\u201d said Clemesha.<\/p>\n<p>The professor said politics and the election underway in Brazil are unavoidable. \u201cThe election issue is inescapable. We\u2019ll need to consider what\u2019s going to happen with foreign policy in Brazil,\u201d she noted.<\/p>\n<p>Simultaneous translation will be available in panels featuring international speakers. The event is held via a partnership by the US, London\u2019s Middle East Monitor and Madrid\u2019s Common Action Forum.
