S\u00e3o Paulo \u2013 Historian Renata Geraissati\u2019s book Um Art\u00edfice na Urbaniza\u00e7\u00e3o Paulistana: Rizkallah Jorge Tahan (1895-1949)<\/em> [A Driver of Urbanization in S\u00e3o Paulo: Rizkallah Jorge Tahan (1895-1949)] will be launched at 4 pm this Thursday (8) at venue\u00a0Casa\u00a0da Boia Cultural<\/a> in S\u00e3o Paulo. The book tells the story of the Syrian-born, Armenian-descendant immigrant who founded Casa da Boia, one of S\u00e3o Paulo\u2019s most traditional retail outlets, which\u00a0turned 120 in 2018<\/a>. The company is currently run by Tahan\u2019s grandson M\u00e1rio Rizkallah, who\u2019s an adviser and former board member at the\u00a0Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Geraissati: the book interweaves the subject’s story with urban development in S\u00e3o Paulo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The publication is based on Geraissati\u2019s master\u2019s research at the Federal University of S\u00e3o Paulo (Unifesp). Casa da Boia\u2019s press office said the publication and its launch have been funded by the S\u00e3o Paulo State Research Foundation (Fapesp). \u201cThe book takes an individual, a micro-history, and connects it with the macro-history of S\u00e3o Paulo and its urban development, from his arrival in the city, in 1885, to his passing, in 1949,\u201d a press release quoted the author as saying.<\/p>\n

The book traces back the steps of this Syrian entrepreneur, including the establishment of Casa da Boia \u2013 at first manufacturing d\u00e9cor items, and afterwards making and selling metal sanitaryware \u2013, his contractor work in real estate and his philanthropy.<\/p>\n

The book\u2019s release by the\u00a0Annablume<\/a>\u00a0publishing house\u00a0is part of the celebrations of the 120th<\/sup> anniversary of Casa da Boia, which also included the opening of Casa da Boia Cultural<\/a>, whose director is M\u00e1rio Rizkallah\u2019s wife Adriana; the exhibition Among papers, photographs and objects: the collection of Rizkallah Jorge Tahan<\/em>, curated by Geraissati; and a major celebration on the traditional outlet on Flor\u00eancio de Abreu street, in downtown S\u00e3o Paulo.<\/p>\n
