{"id":211095,"date":"2019-03-20T20:15:44","date_gmt":"2019-03-20T23:15:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/?p=211095"},"modified":"2019-06-30T18:18:23","modified_gmt":"2019-06-30T21:18:23","slug":"fellowship-program-for-arab-women-launched","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/en\/fellowship-program-for-arab-women-launched\/","title":{"rendered":"Fellowship program for Arab women launched"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>S\u00e3o Paulo \u2013 The UAE\u2019s International Centre for Biosaline Agriculture (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biosaline.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ICBA<\/a>) has launched the first edition of its Arab Women Leaders in Agriculture (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.awlafellowships.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AWLA<\/a>). The fellowship program is intended for women researchers in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), in a partnership with the Bill &amp; Melinda Gates Foundation and the Islamic Development Bank (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.isdb.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IsDB<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Applications will be accepted through April 15 on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.awlafellowships.org\/fellowship-application\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AWLA website<\/a>.\u00a0The program is designed to support female agricultural researchers in getting to leadership roles. Requirements include availability to travel and a valid passport.<\/p>\n<p>The program will help create the first R&amp;D Forum in the MENA region to approach the challenges of agriculture, and the region\u2019s first platform for women researchers in this field. The program will select 20 to 30 researchers in Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine and Tunisia. The researchers will work in Jordan and Tunisia for a ten-month period starting June 1.<\/p>\n<p>According to the AWLA website, female researchers in leadership positions average at 17% across the MENA region \u2013 the lowest rate in the world. This gap is even wider when it comes to research and agricultural extension organizations, although women make up over 40% of the labor force there.
