As of 2016 there were 237,000 such entities in the country, or 4.3% out of 5.5 million public and private profit and non-profit companies and entities registered with the Central Register of Companies (Cempre).<\/p>\n<p>The figures were made public this Friday (5) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). Private foundations and non-profit organizations accounted for 2.3 million and 5.1% of wage-earning persons in 2016. This is the first standalone survey of this kind from IBGE, which used to work in tandem with the Institute for Applied Economic Research (Ipea).<\/p>\n<p>Recession was the main reason for the contraction, since these entities rely heavily on public and private funding.
