{"id":214465,"date":"2019-05-23T18:33:31","date_gmt":"2019-05-23T21:33:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/?p=214465"},"modified":"2019-06-30T16:58:33","modified_gmt":"2019-06-30T19:58:33","slug":"usa-backs-brazils-oecd-accession","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/en\/usa-backs-brazils-oecd-accession\/","title":{"rendered":"USA backs Brazil\u2019s OECD accession"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bras\u00edlia \u2013 The United States moved this Thursday (23) to support Brazil\u2019s accession to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.oecd.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD)<\/a>.\u00a0The official announcement was made during an OECD meeting in Paris.<\/p>\n<p>Brazilian foreign minister Ernesto Ara\u00fajo said this is \u201cthe main item that was missing in order for us to begin our OECD accession process as soon as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The USA\u2019s support, according to Ara\u00fajo, is \u201cvery important in our path to becoming full members of the OECD. We had been counting on this ever since president [Jair] Bolsonaro\u2019s visit to the United States. President Trump had been abundantly clear in guaranteeing his support.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Block <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Brazil made its bid for OECD accession in May 2017, but the USA government had been blocking it. President Donald Trump changed his mind once Bolsonaro pledged that in return for his support, Brazil would waive the special treatment given to developing countries at the World Trade Organization (WTO).<\/p>\n<p>Though not a full member, Brazil is either a partner, participant or guest in 36 different instances of the OECD. It has also adhered to 26 recommendations and other instruments of the OECD, with which it sustains a bilateral cooperation agreement since 2015.<\/p>\n<p>The Paris-based multilateral organization currently has 35 full members.
