S\u00e3o Paulo \u2013 Students from Rio de Janeiro school Col\u00e9gio Liceu Franco-Brasileiro<\/em> (pictured<\/em>) finished second in the\u00a0FIRST LEGO League<\/a> contest in Lebanon. The robotics championship ran from June 14 to 16, comprising three events. Participating teams had to: program a robot built from Lego blocks to score points in a themed field game (The Robot Game); create a project based on this year\u2019s theme \u2013 In Orbit \u2013 posing a problem and its solution; and work with its core values at all times.<\/p>\n

Students created a menstrual cup for astronauts on space missions<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Students were required to do work in design, engineering and the software programs for their robots, as well as the theme project. Rio\u2019s\u00a0FrancoDroid<\/a>\u00a0team created Cosmo Cup \u2013 Space Menstrual Cup, a healthy, sustainable way of dealing with women\u2019s periods in space. \u201cJoining this championship was an incomparable experience. It was so magical it will surely be stuck in our minds forever! We had the honor of representing Brazil. We also got a chance to discuss menstruation \u2013 which is taboo in so many countries \u2013 in Lebanon,\u201d team member and school student Mariana Lopes (pictured<\/em>) told ANBA via messaging.<\/p>\n

She also discussed the importance of the cultural interchange experienced by the team while competing in an Arab country. \u201cSince we were surrounded by different cultures, we also learned to respect others and to understand other cultures. This was priceless and very enriching,\u201d said Mariana. Her teammates were Diogo Barreiros, Daniel Gudin, Gabriel Flor\u00eancio, Daniel Martins, Giulia Orlandi, Helena Marques and Ana Clara Teixeira.<\/p>\n

Apart from the bigger competition, FIRST LEGO League gives awards to specific categories. FrancoDroid placed third in \u2018The Robot Game.\u2019 Team\u00a0Galaxy Forces<\/a>\u00a0placed first in \u2018Mechanical Design\u2019 with their robot design. Hailing from Mossor\u00f3, Rio Grande do Norte, they created a project which concluded that astronauts lose muscle mass in space, and came up with an outfit made from theraband-type material \u2013 which is used in physical therapy.<\/p>\n

And team Conectados<\/a>\u00a0out of Curitiba, Paran\u00e1, finished 3rd<\/sup> in \u2018Mechanical Design.\u2019 Its team members, from Escola Municipal Coronel Durival Britto e Silva<\/em>, devised a themed project to address anxiety in space with lavender extract caps.<\/p>\n
