Brazilian delegates were there, at a stand organized by the Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce and the Embassy of Brazil in Algeria’s capital. “This is the 52nd edition of the fair, which affords much visibility to participating countries. Brazil is one of a select few countries that have joined this edition,” Brazil’s ambassador to Algiers Flávio Marega (pictured, R) told ANBA via audio message.

He thanked the Arab Chamber for its support in organizing the stand. “Algeria is Brazil’s second-biggest trading partner in the Middle East and North Africa, so this presence is very important, not only when it comes to following through with ongoing deals in the country, but also when it comes to finding new importers of Brazilian goods,” the diplomat argued.

Algeria is the second-biggest Arab supplier to Brazil, trailing Saudi Arabia. Year-to-date through May 2019 saw USD 758 million worth of goods imported to Brazil from Algeria, up 12% from a year ago, according to Arab Chamber data. The top-selling products are oil and fertilizers.

Conversely, Algeria is the fourth biggest Arab export destination for Brazilian goods, with sales amounting to USD 473 million year-to-date through May, up 9.4%. The best-selling goods here are sugar, soya oil, maize, iron ore and beef.

The ambassador noted that agribusiness plays a very big role in Brazil-Algeria bilateral trade, although he said industrial players should also join events like the Algiers Fair. As a case in point, he mentioned Santa Catarina, Brazil-based electric engine maker WEG, which does business in Algeria and showcased its products at the event.

Ethiopia

Delegates from Ethiopia visited Brazil’s stand

On the last day of the Fair, the Brazilian stand was visited by Ethiopia’s ambassador to Algiers, Amin Abdulkadir (pictured, C), and by a delegation of coffee growers from that country.

Arab Chamber Institutional Relations manager Fernanda Baltazar (pictured, L) said the Ethiopians were seeking out information on the Brazilian coffee industry, as well as to discuss the prospects of engaging in technical cooperation with Brazil.
