{"id":251878,"date":"2019-07-10T17:41:09","date_gmt":"2019-07-10T20:41:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/?p=251878"},"modified":"2019-07-10T18:22:13","modified_gmt":"2019-07-10T21:22:13","slug":"brazilian-re-elected-president-of-codex-alimentarius","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/en\/brazilian-re-elected-president-of-codex-alimentarius\/","title":{"rendered":"Brazilian re-elected president of Codex Alimentarius"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>S\u00e3o Paulo \u2013 Guilherme Costa of Brazil has been appointed president of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fao.org\/fao-who-codexalimentarius\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Codex Alimentarius Commission<\/a>, an arm of the United Nations tasked with setting international standards in food production, control, inspection and sales, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.agricultura.gov.br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply<\/a>\u00a0reported on Tuesday (9).<\/p>\n<p>The Ministry said Costa is a veterinarian and federal agricultural inspector currently serving a stint as agricultural attach\u00e9 at the Embassy of Brazil in Brussels, Belgium. He started his first term in 2017, was reelected in 2018 and got reappointed on Monday (8) during the Commission\u2019s 42<sup>nd<\/sup> session in Geneva, Switzerland.<\/p>\n<p>Codex Alimentarius standards are designed to protect consumer health and ensure fair practices in food trade. According to the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Costa stressed the relevance of those two pillars in achieving food security and said the organization\u2019s work \u201cmust be underpinned by science.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Codex Alimentarius was created in 1963 by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fao.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FAO<\/a>) and the World Health Organization (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WHO<\/a>).
