{"id":252313,"date":"2019-07-16T18:25:21","date_gmt":"2019-07-16T21:25:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/?p=252313"},"modified":"2021-05-17T21:22:57","modified_gmt":"2021-05-18T00:22:57","slug":"book-on-sustainable-goals-released-in-arabic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/en\/book-on-sustainable-goals-released-in-arabic\/","title":{"rendered":"Book on sustainable goals released in Arabic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>S\u00e3o Paulo \u2013 Last week saw the release of <em>The Global Goals Book<\/em>, a freely downloadable <a href=\"https:\/\/innovationlabschools.com\/book\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">e-book<\/a> containing sample lessons by teachers from different countries on the <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainabledevelopment.un.org\/?menu=1300\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sustainable Development Goals<\/a> (SDGs) of the United Nations (UN). The book is available in Arabic (<em>pictured above<\/em>), English and Italian, and a Portuguese version will be out soon.<\/p>\n<p>The book contains the work of nine authors, including Brazil\u2019s Francisco Tupy, with editing done by Belgium\u2019s Koen Timmers and the USA\u2019s Jennifer Williams. Teachers from Australia, New Zealand and Ireland are also involved, as well as Souad Belcaid, from Morocco.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_252277\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-252277\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/global-goals-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-252277 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/global-goals-1-300x143.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"143\" srcset=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/global-goals-1-300x143.jpg 300w, https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/global-goals-1-768x366.jpg 768w, https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/global-goals-1.jpg 1001w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-252277\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The book&#8217;s cover<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The e-book features sample lessons on the SDGs from the UN\u2019s 2030 Agenda. \u201cThe focus is on teachers, so that whenever they need these contents, they will have examples of methodologies to work with, instead of being left in the dark,\u201d told ANBA.<\/p>\n<p>According to the introduction, this group of educators believes education is the solution to the world\u2019s problems. \u201cBy 2030, the youth of today will be economically active adults. They will be producing things and making decisions, so the idea is to relay the contents of the SDGs to them, to steer students\u2019 attentions towards these important subjects, and to empower them,\u201d said Tupy.<\/p>\n<p>He also said the sample lessons are templates designed to inspire teachers to come up with their own class plans. \u201cThe class plans are complete and can be followed step-by-step, or adapted to different realities,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<p>The 17 Sustainable Development Goals are: 1) No Poverty; 2) Zero Hunger;\u00a0 3) Good Health and Well-being;\u00a0 4) Quality Education; 5) Gender Equality; 6) Clean Water and Sanitation; 7) Affordable and Clean Energy; 8) Decent Work and Economic Growth; 9) Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure; 10) Reduced Inequality; 11) Sustainable Cities and Communities; 12) Responsible Consumption and Production; 13) Climate Action; 14) Life Below Water; 15) Life on Land; 16) Peace and Justice Strong Institutions; 17) Partnerships to achieve the goals.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_252316\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-252316\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/cc8980ed-53e6-4740-8adc-b72f38f1d5e7.jpeg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-252316\" src=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/cc8980ed-53e6-4740-8adc-b72f38f1d5e7-300x152.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"203\" srcset=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/cc8980ed-53e6-4740-8adc-b72f38f1d5e7-300x152.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/cc8980ed-53e6-4740-8adc-b72f38f1d5e7.jpeg 750w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-252316\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The 17 SDGs<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The book is usable by teachers of various subjects. \u201cThe topics are cross-disciplinary, allowing teachers of different subjects to work together or by themselves on multidisciplinary projects. Each teacher will approach the subjects differently,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<p>Tupy wrote the eighth chapter, which suggests lessons using the Microsoft computer game Minecraft. \u201cAll of the lessons suggested in the book can include extensions of Minecraft and Lego,\u201d said Tupy. Schools are required to install the game in their computers.<\/p>\n<p>One lesson suggests simulating situations and characters to work with communication within Minecraft\u2019s virtual environment. \u201cIt\u2019s not just about building; it\u2019s also about using this virtual space, with text-based communication, for problem-solving,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/en\/schools-recreate-historic-arab-sites-using-minecraft\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tupy is a Brazilian-born, Arab-descendant teacher<\/a> with a degree in Geography, a master\u2019s in Game Design and a doctorate degree in Communication Applied to Games from the School of Communication and Arts (ECA) of the University of S\u00e3o Paulo (USP). For his doctorate thesis he delved into Minecraft applied to communication.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Innovations Lab<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Aside from the free e-book, an international website has been created: <a href=\"https:\/\/innovationsdglab.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Innovations Lab<\/em><\/a>\u00a0is a network for teachers from around the world to divulge their work in, engage in networking and translate contents into other languages.<\/p>\n<p>The project also includes the <em>Innovation Lab Schools<\/em>, 12 brick-and-mortar schools around the world \u2013 including one in Rio de Janeiro and one in Morocco \u2013 whose goal is to promote and share knowledge and encourage critical thinking. By 2020, the project is expected to reach 10,000 teachers and a million students.<\/p>\n<p>The book relies on support from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.janegoodall.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Jane Goodall Institute<\/em><\/a>, a global wildlife and environment conservation organization based in Virginia, USA, with offices in approximately 30 countries.
