{"id":260790,"date":"2019-10-27T14:14:35","date_gmt":"2019-10-27T17:14:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/?p=260790"},"modified":"2019-10-27T14:15:53","modified_gmt":"2019-10-27T17:15:53","slug":"uae-wants-to-invest-in-brazil-says-president","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/en\/uae-wants-to-invest-in-brazil-says-president\/","title":{"rendered":"UAE wants to invest in Brazil, says president"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Abu Dhabi \u2013 President Jair Bolsonaro of Brazil said this Sunday (27) that investors in the United Arab Emirates are interested in Brazilian infrastructure projects. \u201cThey want to invest, and we need it. Infrastructure is a good thing, it can enable our products to arrive at their destinations with a competitive edge,\u201d he said after during the Brazil-UAE business seminar in Abu Dhabi \u2013 the first stop in a tour of three Gulf countries.<\/p>\n<p>Apart from discussing investment opportunities, the president said the purpose of the trip is to show that Brazil is \u201cregaining the world\u2019s trust\u201d and that \u201cthe numbers of the economy show that the country is on the right track. \u201cIt\u2019s about reaching out our hands and saying that we can do lots of good things for our people,\u201d he declared.<\/p>\n<p>Questioned whether any of the investments Brazil intends to attract are going into the defense industry \u2013 where agreements have been entered into \u2013, Bolsonaro said: \u201cSome. Most of the investment will go into production, into our commodities. Those come first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brazil is a major supplier of agricultural commodities to the UAE and the Arab countries in general, which are concerned about ensuring a steady supply of food items. \u201cBrazil will be glad about our trip here,\u201d said Bolsonaro.<\/p>\n<p>During the seminar, the president went over Brazil\u2019s economic scenario, including the benchmark interest rate, which is at an all-time low; inflation, which might end the year lower than the administration\u2019s target; and the reduction of unemployment and of the so-called \u201cBrazil risk.\u201d He also noted that Congress has passed a Pension Reform and discussions are ongoing regarding Tax and Administration reforms, as well as the Mercosur-European Union trade agreement.<\/p>\n<p>Besides infrastructure, Bolsonaro mentioned the oil and gas exploration and production auctions due November as investment options.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrazil is a country that\u2019s opening up to trade with the world. We\u2019re dramatically reducing paperwork requirements and everything that can get in the way of trade. We are conquering these boundaries,\u201d said Bolsonaro. \u201cHere\u2019s a man with an open heart, reaching out his hand to your sirs, and asking you to put your trust in our country. We have a lot to offer, and you, sirs, have a lot to offer us,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n<p><strong>On the same note<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Several Brazilian government officials spoke on the country\u2019s economic health, reforms, ongoing liberalization, and its attractiveness to foreign investment.<\/p>\n<p>Foreign Minister Ernesto Ara\u00fajo said the administration is working to improve the business environment and to reach new trade agreements. \u201cOur foreign policy is based on friendship and good business,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He also said Brazil and the UAE have built \u201cexcellent\u201d political and economic relations. \u201cAnd since we have matching world views, we can go far beyond,\u201d he argued. According to the FM, bilateral relations are rising to \u201cstrategic partnership\u201d status. \u201cAnd the business community is one of the drivers of these relations,\u201d he said. He went over the Investment Partnerships Program (IPP), with projects \u201cexceeding BRL 1.4 trillion\u201d (or USD 683 billion at current exchange rates). He said priority industries include oil, railways, agriculture and renewable energy \u2013 especially solar and wind power \u2013 and mining, which according to him the UAE are very interested in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease come to Brazil. Make it a great partner of yours. There\u2019s an ocean of opportunity in Brazil,\u201d said Lorenzoni.<\/p>\n<p>Defense Ministry secretary-general admiral Almir Garnier said there\u2019s a huge potential for closer cooperation in defense, and that defense industry players have joined president Bolsonaro\u2019s entourage to figure out what the UAE\u2019s needs are, and to be able to cater to its Armed Forces.<\/p>\n<p><strong>On the UAE\u2019s part<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Speaking for the UAE\u2019s government, minister of State Ahmed Al Sayegh discussed bilateral cooperation opportunities in food security, mining, computing and other technologies. \u201cThe UAE are working on reforms to make its economy more competitive, so that foreign players can be successful here,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd the UAE are a gateway to promising markets such as India, Asia and the Arab countries.
