S\u00e3o Paulo \u2013 The Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce<\/strong><\/a> board of directors convened on Wednesday (4) at the organization\u2019s headquarters with religious leaders from different denominations, diplomats and Arab community leaders in S\u00e3o Paulo for a pre-holiday get-together dinner.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had another ecumenical dinner with people with different outlooks, from different institutions and different religions, united by mutual respect,\u201d said Arab Chamber president Rubens Hannun (pictured<\/em>). \u201cOur community values specific cultures,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The Chamber hosts such dinners twice a year: once during Ramadan \u2013 the most important month in the Islamic calendar \u2013 and once before Christmas and the Christian New Year. \u201cWe are united here out of respect towards these two cultures,\u201d said Hannun.<\/p>\n

Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral priest Greg\u00f3rio Teodoro spoke on behalf of S\u00e3o Paulo Antiochian Orthodox Church archbishop Dom Damaskinos Mansour, who was away on a trip. \u201c[This meeting] is such a welcome, necessary initiative in our times,\u201d he said. \u201cDiversity in the world and among human beings is the will of God,\u201d he went on.<\/p>\n

He wished happy holidays, \u201ca blessed end-of-year and a new year filled with joy and accomplishments.\u201d \u201cUnity in spite of differences shows that peaceful coexistence is possible all over the world,\u201d he said. \u201cWe wish that peace, God\u2019s peace, celestial peace be in the hearts of everyone,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n

Sheikh Al Bukai: Arab Chamber builds bridges within the Arab Community in Brazil<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Sheikh Mohammad Al Bukai of S\u00e3o Paulo\u2019s Brazil Mosque argued that the Arab Brazilian Chamber conveys an important message with these get-togethers. \u201cThat [the organization] isn\u2019t just about business; that it connects human beings as it builds bridges not just among Brazil and the Arab countries, but also within the community in Brazil,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Al Bukai said the biggest investment one can make is in human beings. \u201cTowards the end of the year we tend to reflect about our lives. Life goes on fast, but we can leave a legacy, and the best thing we can leave behind is this brotherhood among us,\u201d said the sheikh, referring to coexistence between people from different backgrounds and creeds.<\/p>\n

Apart from Christian and Muslim religious leaders, the dinner was attended by Kuwait ambassador to Bras\u00edlia Nasser Almotairi, Lebanon consul-general to S\u00e3o Paulo Rudy El Azzi, UAE consul-general to S\u00e3o Paulo Salem Alalawi, Arab Chamber board members, and delegates from organizations including the Federation of Muslim Associations in Brazil (Fambras), the Center for Promotion of Islam in Latin America (Cdial), the Federation of Arab-Brazilian Entities (Fearab), the Syrian Sports Club, Club Homs, Rachaia Clube, and the Institute for Arab Culture (Icarabe).<\/p>\n

Thursday evening (5) at the Arab Chamber headquarters will see the launch of the Kuwait Cultural Week<\/a>,\u00a0with events starting Friday (6) in S\u00e3o Paulo. \u201cWithout the Arab Chamber\u2019s support we wouldn\u2019t have been able to have the Kuwait Cultural Week,\u201d ambassador Almotairi said. \u201cSince 1968, when Brazil and Kuwait established diplomatic ties, this is the first time that such a week takes place,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n
