Aqaba \u2013 The seaside city of Aqaba in Jordan received a significant number of local and foreign visitors over the first two days of the year, Jordanian news agency Petra<\/em><\/a> reported. The occupancy rates for hotels hit 90%, according to preliminary data issued by the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA).<\/p>\n

The Authority\u2019s chairman Nayef Bakhit said that the large number of tourists reflects successful tourism programs agreed with foreign countries. The industry is one of the most important for the country\u2019s economy and had been negatively impacted by the conflicts in the neighbor countries, especially Iraq and Syria, over the last years.<\/p>\n

The city is in a small coastline in Jordan, in the Red Sea, and besides being an important tourist destination, holds the country\u2019s only seaport.<\/p>\n
