That\u2019s the feeling you get when you watch Orquestra Mundana Refugi. To open this year\u2019s calendar, the multicultural <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/orquestramundanarefugi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">group<\/a> will play at <a href=\"http:\/\/casadefrancisca.art.br\/novo\/programacao\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Casa de Francisca<\/a> on February 4 at 9:30 pm. The small palace in the center of S\u00e3o Paulo hosted the orchestra\u2019s last performance in 2019 (<em>pictured above<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-one musicians from nine countries in Latin America, Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East, besides Brazil, are part of the Orquestra Mundana Refugi, a project that begun in April 2017. With two albums released, the group consists of Brazilian, immigrant and refugees from several parts of the world under the musical direction of Carlinhos Anturnes. The musicality of the Middle East \u2013 represented by Palestine, Syria, Iran and Turkey \u2013 meets Asian, African, Brazilian sounds, unusual arrangements and original compositions.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 755px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-266522-1\" width=\"755\" height=\"427\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/WhatsApp-Video-2020-01-24-at-11.44.35.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/WhatsApp-Video-2020-01-24-at-11.44.35.mp4\">https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/WhatsApp-Video-2020-01-24-at-11.44.35.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The current makeup consists of eleven Brazilians and ten migrants. On vocals, Syrian-Palestine Oula Al-Saghir, Hidras Tuala and Leonardo Matumona from Congo, Mah Mooni from Iran, Paula Mirhan from Brazil, and from Guinea, Mariama Camara, who\u2019s also on drums.<\/p>\n<p>Instruments range from the Arab kanun to accordion, piano, violin, guqin, bouzouki, and others. The Brazilian musicians are Carlinhos Antunes (chords), Beto Angerosa (percussion), Daniel Muller (accordion), Danilo Penteado (piano), Maiara Moraes (flute), Marcus Simon (substituting Pedro Ito on the drums), Rui Barossi (bass), Tiago Daiello (cello), Chinese-Brazilian Nelson Lin (zither), and Lebanese-Tunisian descendant Claudio Kairouz (Arab kanun).<\/p>\n<p>From Guinea, Abou Ciss\u00e9 (percussion); from Cuba, Luis Cabrera (sax); France, Mathilde Fillat (violin); Turkey, Chadas Ustuntas (viola); e from Palestine, Yousef Saif (bouzouki).<\/p>\n<p>Antunes said that the orchestra has matured and finds itself at its peak. \u201cWe\u2019re at the orchestra\u2019s third phase. Nobody is just a musician from their country anymore. To become a musician of the orchestra, we go through every culture, with respect, diversity and a genuine internal dialogue. We\u2019ve improved and want to show that. Now we\u2019ve became an orchestra where everyone sings and plays songs from their original people and other peoples, where rhythms and melodies are at service to both the orchestra and the audience,\u201d the orchestra director told ANBA.<\/p>\n<p>That Oula Al-Saghir have arrived in Brazil from Palestine in 2016 without speaking Portuguese and now sings songs by Chico Buarque and Milton Nascimento is an example of the orchestra musical evolution and trajectory. <em>On the video, she sings \u201cViver \u00e9 perigoso demais\u201d by Carlinhos Antunes and Susana Travassos.<\/em><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 755px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-266522-2\" width=\"755\" height=\"427\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/WhatsApp-Video-2020-01-24-at-11.45.52-1.mp4?_=2\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/WhatsApp-Video-2020-01-24-at-11.45.52-1.mp4\">https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/WhatsApp-Video-2020-01-24-at-11.45.52-1.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Orquestra Mundana Refugi was formed in 2017 within the Refugi project in Sesc Consola\u00e7\u00e3o in S\u00e3o Paulo, which held free music workshops for immigrants and refugees. The group\u2019s goal is raising awareness on the refugee cause and showing music as a synthesis of welcome and respect to diversity.<\/p>\n<p>The group has recorded two albums, Caravana Refugi (2019), with 11 tracks, and Sess\u00f5es Selo Sesc #1: Orquestra Mundana Refugi (2017), with 10 tracks, both available on Spotify <em>(check out below).<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The repertoire of the concert will features songs from both albums, such as \u2018Abertura Refugi,\u2019 \u2018Mungu de C\u00e1,\u2019 \u2018As Caravanas,\u2019 \u2018Rap Palestino,\u2019 and \u2018Pot-Pourri Milton Nascimento\u2019, as well as new songs such as \u2018Sombras da Rom\u00e3zeira,\u2019 a song written by Antunes inspired on the book \u2018Shadows of the Pomegranate Tree\u2019 by Pakistani writer Tariq Ali. \u201cIt\u2019s a song inspired by that book, and we\u2019ve included a poem by Jo\u00e3o Cabral de Melo Neto,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.casadefrancisca.art.br\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Casa de Francisca<\/a> is at Rua Quintino Bocai\u00fava with Rua Benjamin Constant.
