The virtual live event will be performed in English and feature Portuguese subtitles. The presentation is unique and can be seen on YouTube.

Complexo Sul is an event that brings together several art activities and is hosted by the Brazilian-led collective and work nucleus Complexo Duplo. Its first edition took place in Rio de Janeiro, and this year’s second edition is taking place from November 2 to December 18, featuring lectures, plays and meetings online.

Mroué lives in Berlin, Germany and was in Brazil during the 2017 São Paulo International Theatre Festival (pictured above). He is one of the great names in the investigative genre performance lecture, where visual artists, dancers and actors merge an academic lecture and an art performance, blurring the lines between fiction and reality.

In his new work, Mroué narrates the experience of an unusual incident that took place during his prep for an art exhibition in the city of Salzburg, Austria. The artist raises a series of questions about the relationship between art and the public sphere. Mixing his memories and artistic researches to historical facts, he evokes the perverse, intimidating American airborne leaflet propaganda in the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki (1945), the Iraq War (2003-2001) and the Lebanese Civil War (1975-1990), which he eyewitnessed in his teenage years. Through the tale, the artist invites the audience to reflect on the lines between life and art and the relationship between art the public sphere.

The performance will be followed by a chat with the artist and theater critic and philosophy professor Patrick Pessoa moderated by Complexo Sul curator Daniele Avila Small. The meeting will feature translation into Portuguese.

The artist

Rabih Mroué was born in Beirut in 1967. Rooted in theater, his work lies at the frontiers of theater, performance and video, bluring the lines between fiction and documentary. Usually the conflicts in the Middle East of the last decades, especially in Lebanon, serve as material to the artist. He is co-founder of the Beirut Art Center; a contributing editor of TDR: The Drama Review (NYC); and theater director at Münchner Kammerspiele (Munich).

Quick facts

Performance lecture “Before Falling Seek the Assistance of Your Cane – A Non-Academic Lecture by Rabih Mroué””
November 23, 7 pm (BRT)
Live broadcast in English with subtitles in Portuguese
YouTube

Translated by Guilherme Miranda

Guto Muniz

Lebanese actor, playwright, and visual artist Rabih Mroué will perform in a world premiere on the international interchange platform Complexo Sul on November 23 with subtitles in Portuguese.

[89,114
18047,18040,18039,18046,18048
0":"post-284496","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-culture","8":"category-news","9":"tag-complexo-sul-en","10":"tag-complexo-sul","11":"tag-palestra-performance","12":"tag-performance-lecture","13":"tag-rabih-mroue-en
Lebanese actor, playwright, and visual artist Rabih Mroué will perform in a world premiere on the international interchange platform Complexo Sul on November 23 with subtitles in Portuguese.
["GET
