{"id":284667,"date":"2020-11-20T18:58:17","date_gmt":"2020-11-20T21:58:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/?p=284667"},"modified":"2020-11-20T18:58:17","modified_gmt":"2020-11-20T21:58:17","slug":"live-stream-to-address-arab-influence-in-brazilian-music","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/en\/live-stream-to-address-arab-influence-in-brazilian-music\/","title":{"rendered":"Live stream to address Arab influence in Brazilian music"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>S\u00e3o Paulo \u2013 Arab influence in Brazilian music will be the topic of an online event to be hosted by the <strong>Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce<\/strong> (ABCC) and the Embassy of Brazil in Lebanon, via the Brazil-Lebanon Cultural Center (BrasiLiban), next Thursday (26). The event will air in English on the BrasiLiban <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Brasiliban\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Facebook<\/a> page, featuring a lecture by ABCC cultural director Silvia Antibas, and the musician Valtinho Cayuella playing songs that run the gamut from Brazilian folk music (MPB) to Carnaval-style <em>marchinhas.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A historian, Antibas won the 2019 UNESCO-Sharjah Prize for Arab Culture. She will discuss the history of Arab influence in Brazil, which far predates the early waves of Syrian and Lebanese immigration to Brazil during the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century. Antibas will delve into the coming of people from the Iberian Peninsula \u2013 the Portuguese and the Spanish \u2013 to Brazil. Their songs were informed by Moorish sounds as well as the Arabic prayers of enslaved Muslims.<\/p>\n<p>The historian will explain how that amalgamation of African music, Arab influences, and specific instruments informed Brazilian rhythms like the <em>samba<\/em>, and how these rhythms got further input from incoming Middle East immigrants.<\/p>\n<p>Cayuella will play songs including \u201cO B\u00eabado e o Equilibrista,\u201d by Jo\u00e3o Bosco, \u201cTocando em Frente,\u201d by Almir Sater, and <em>marchinhas<\/em> like \u201cAlala\u00f4,\u201d whose lyrics and music reference Arab elements.<\/p>\n<p>The live stream is the first project to see the ABCC and BrasiLiban come together.
