{"id":287471,"date":"2021-01-25T07:00:16","date_gmt":"2021-01-25T10:00:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/?p=287471"},"modified":"2021-01-22T17:44:21","modified_gmt":"2021-01-22T20:44:21","slug":"free-course-to-discuss-arabic-portuguese-translation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/en\/free-course-to-discuss-arabic-portuguese-translation\/","title":{"rendered":"Free course to discuss Arabic-Portuguese translation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>S\u00e3o Paulo \u2013 The Center for Arab and Islamic Studies (<em>Centro de Estudos \u00c1rabes e Isl\u00e2micos &#8211; CEAI<\/em>) of the Federal University of Sergipe (UFS) will offer a free online course in literary translation from Arabic into Portuguese. The classes will take place on January 26 and 28 and on February 2, 4, 9 and 11. Seats are limited and enrolment is available on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sigaa.ufs.br\/sigaa\/public\/extensao\/paginaListaPeriodosInscricoesAtividadesPublico.jsf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UFS website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Entitled \u201cTranslation as a Reading of the other,\u201d the course will comprise six two-hour classes. Even though professionals specializing in other languages \u2013 including French \u2013will be involved, special emphasis will be placed on the Arabic language.<\/p>\n<p>The discussions will delve into ethical, cultural and philosophical aspects. \u201cThis course was born of the ascertainment of a need. Graduate students expressed an interest in a discussion of non-technical aspects of translation,\u201d CEAI coordinator Geraldo Adriano Godoy de Campos told ANBA. There are no prerequisites. It\u2019s meant for people interested in discussing and learning about the topic. Seasoned Brazilian translators will discuss translation from Arabic into Portuguese,\u201d de Campos said.<\/p>\n<p>The course will feature professors associated with the CEAI, except for the keynote speaker, Mamede Jarouche, PhD, of the University of S\u00e3o Paulo (USP), who first translated the Book of One Thousand and One Nights directly from Arabic manuscripts into Brazilian Portuguese.<\/p>\n<p>UFS professors Wellington Costa, of the Department of Languages, who translated Jean Cocteau\u2019s work from French into Portuguese; Ahmed Hussein el Zoghbi, a CEAI researcher currently pursuing a doctorate degree in Philosophy, whose master\u2019s dissertation was a translation of tales by Palestine\u2019s Ghassan Kanafani from Arabic into Portuguese; and de Campos, who\u2019s a professor at the UFS\u2019 Department of International Relations.<\/p>\n<p>Classes will also be taught by professionals from other universities, including Felipe Benjamin, PhD, of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.
