A series of personal and professional testimonies on this influence were presented on Thursday, March 25, the Arab Community Day in Brazil, during an online event hosted by the <strong>Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce<\/strong> (ABCC) and the Arab House.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-290468 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/claudio-300x183.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"183\" srcset=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/claudio-300x183.jpg 300w, https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/claudio-1024x623.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/claudio-768x467.jpg 768w, https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/claudio.jpg 1152w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Few people know it, but Brazil\u2019s best basketball player Oscar Schmidt (<em>pictured above<\/em>) used to play for the Syrian Sports Club, which was founded by the Syrian community in S\u00e3o Paulo. At the club, he won the world title and gained national and international recognition. In a recorded video Schmidt talked about that and how the Syrian Sports Club was the best team he played for. \u201cSome of my greatest friends came from there,\u201d he said. \u201cI really miss those times,\u201d he finished.<\/p>\n<p>As for musician Cl\u00e1udio Kairouz, he\u2019s often mistaken for an Arab descendant. But he says his connection is different. \u201cI\u2019m a proud Brazilian, but my heart is Lebanese,\u201d he said in his live participation in the webinar. Coming from a classical piano background, he came across the Arab music in his teenage years and has never left it since. Diogo Bercito writes on Middle East-related topics in his blog. Besides having being a correspondent for <em>Folha<\/em> in Jerusalem, having lived in Beirut and Cairo, he got a doctor degree in the History of Arabs in Brazil. \u201cI\u2019m not an Arab descendant, but I\u2019m pleased to tell some of their history, to be somewhat part of it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_290477\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-290477\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-290477\" src=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/vargens-12-300x174.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"174\" srcset=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/vargens-12-300x174.jpg 300w, https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/vargens-12-1024x595.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/vargens-12-768x446.jpg 768w, https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/vargens-12.jpg 1175w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-290477\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Medeiros taught in Morocco<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Scholar Jo\u00e3o Baptista Vargens de Medeiros won the UNESCO-Sharjah Prize for Arab Culture promoted by the the United Nations&#8217; cultural agency and the government of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. But his connection with the Arabs had started long before, when he studied Arabic at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and then moved to Syria to study Arabic and Morocco to teach Portuguese and Brazilian culture. He said he had two reasons for studying Arabic: the influence of stories set in the Arab countries and his identification with the Palestinian cause.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_290474\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-290474\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-290474\" src=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/frisso-1-300x173.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"173\" srcset=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/frisso-1-300x173.jpg 300w, https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/frisso-1-1024x592.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/frisso-1-768x444.jpg 768w, https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/frisso-1.jpg 1215w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-290474\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Frisso addressed her relations with the Arabs<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Another person who told their story with the Arabs was H2R Pesquisas Avan\u00e7adas institute director Alessandra Frisso. Married to a Syrian-descendant husband, she talked about how welcome she felt in her husband\u2019s family and the Arab community in Brazil, and how she felt at home when visiting Arab countries such as Egypt and Tunisia. \u201cThis changed how I now see family and the Arab community,\u201d she said. Frisso became the president of the ABCC\u2019s women\u2019s committee WAHI \u2013 Women Who Inspire, which works to bring Arab and Brazilian women together, particularly in business.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_290480\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-290480\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-290480\" src=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/karina-cassapula-300x171.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"171\" srcset=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/karina-cassapula-300x171.jpg 300w, https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/karina-cassapula-1024x583.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/karina-cassapula-768x437.jpg 768w, https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/karina-cassapula.jpg 1241w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-290480\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cassapula: Passion for the Arab countries<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>ABCC Marketing manager Karina Cassapula gave her testimony as an enthusiast of the Arab culture. A non-Arab descendant, Cassapula talked how she came across the culture when she was first hired by the ABCC in 2008 \u2013 and again in 2019 \u2013 and started touring through the Arab nations such as the ancient Egypt and the modern UAE. \u201cWhen we really like something, we get passionate about it, and it shows,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_290486\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-290486\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-290486\" src=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/tamet-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/tamet-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/tamet.jpg 627w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-290486\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Egypt\u2019s Mansour conducted the talks<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The testimonies from people who had their life stories marked by Arabs, immigrants or the Middle Eastern culture were moderated by ABCC secretary-general Tamer Mansour, who\u2019s an Egyptian immigrant who moved to Brazil in his youth. \u201cWhen we planned this part of the event, we wanted to understand how far the Arab influence had reached in Brazil,\u201d he said. The idea was showing that the Arab presence in Brazil goes far beyond its immigrants.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Arabs across Brazil<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But the event on Arab immigration also brought stories by those who are part of the community as descendants and have a relevant role in the Brazilian development in their particular area of expertise. A testimony by Brazil\u2019s former president Michel Temer, a son of Lebanese parents, was broadcasted. He described his life story as an example of how Brazil can be welcoming for immigrants. Grupo Bandeirantes TV host Renata Maron also addressed how proud she\u2019s to be part of the community and how her world has changed since she first traveled to an Arab country.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_290483\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-290483\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-290483\" src=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/sarruf-300x173.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"173\" srcset=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/sarruf-300x173.jpg 300w, https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/sarruf-1024x591.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/sarruf-768x444.jpg 768w, https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/sarruf.jpg 1219w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-290483\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sarruf did media coverage in Arab countries<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The event\u2019s host, journalist Marina Sarruf, gave her own testimony. She\u2019s the ABCC communication coordinator but was one of the first reporters of the Brazil-Arab News Agency (ANBA) and did media coverage in several Arab countries, including Iraq. I\u2019m so proud to have worked at ANBA for seven years,\u201d she said. Dr. Alvaro Sarkis, a Urology professor at the University of S\u00e3o Paulo (USP), talked on video about his Arab background and mentioned the colony\u2019s contribution for the creation of institutions that bring wellbeing for the Brazilian peoples, such as the children-oriented Lar S\u00edrio and M\u00e3o Branca, for the elderly, as well as HCor and S\u00edrio-Liban\u00eas hospitals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>March 25<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_290489\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-290489\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-290489\" src=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/webinar-imigracao-1-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/webinar-imigracao-1-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/webinar-imigracao-1.jpg 633w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-290489\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hannun opened and closed the event<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The event was opened with a brief history on the Arab immigration to Brazil and the size of the Arab community in Brazil, which reaches 11.6 million people. A survey commissioned by the ABCC and carried out by Ibope Intelig\u00eancia and H2R Pesquisas Avan\u00e7adas research firm found out this figure, first made public last year. In a brief video, Ibope Intelig\u00eancia CEO M\u00e1rcia Cavallari addressed the survey\u2019s making.<\/p>\n<p>ABCC president Rubens Hannun explained how the Arab Community Day in Brazil had to be celebrated online for the second year running due to the pandemic. \u201cWe\u2019re minding the social distancing,\u201d he said. Even so, the event got viewed by some 3,600 people. Hannun said the webinar was for all &#8211; Arabs, descendants and others who live with this community in Brazil.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_290492\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-290492\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-290492\" src=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/salem-300x166.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"166\" srcset=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/salem-300x166.jpg 300w, https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/salem.jpg 631w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-290492\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nasser talked about the 25 de Mar\u00e7o Street<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>An expert in studies on the Middle East, Arab World and Muslims, Salem Nasser talked about the Arab Community Day, which is celebrated on March 25 in honor of the 25 de Mar\u00e7o Street in S\u00e3o Paulo, where many Arab merchants lived after moving to Brazil. He said that, before the Arabs settled, it was a key commercial street in the city of S\u00e3o Paulo. \u201cAt some point, the Arabs took over the street,\u201d said Nasser. The Arab Community Day was created based on a bill by senator Romeu Tuma.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Solidarity<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>During the event, the immigration was also addressed from other perspectives such as the solidarity that has brought together Arabs and Brazilians in these COVID-19 pandemic times. The ABCC, which called on the community to help hospitals and institutions with protective equipment during the pandemic and did the same to send relief to Lebanon last year, has launched a new campaign to raise food baskets and distribute them to struggling Brazilians. Find out more in another story.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Memory<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_290496\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-290496\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-290496\" src=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/helo-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/helo-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/helo.jpg 621w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-290496\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Julien presented a memory project<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The viewers were also called to collaborate with the Digitization Project of the Memory of Arab Immigration in Brazil. The initiative is carried out by the ABCC in partnership with the Holy Spirit University of Kaslik (USEK) in Lebanon to document and digitize the history of this immigration to Brazil. The project\u2019s coordinator Heloisa Abreu Dib Julien talked about the work progress and asked people to submit any materials they have.
