The volume shipped reached 1,603,204 60-kg bags, fetching USD 209.8 million, down 3% from 2020, the Brazilian Coffee Exporters Council (Cecaf\u00e9) reported on Monday (17). <em>Pictured above, a conilon coffee plantation.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The decline was seen in shipments to several other blocs, including major buyers of the Brazilian coffee like Europe and North America. \u201cThere has been a decline, including to the Arab countries, which we have always announced as major importers,\u201d Cecaf\u00e9 director-general Marcos Matos pointed out during a press conference.<\/p>\n<p>Total exports from Brazil stepped down 9.75% in volume to 40.4 million bags exported in 2021. On the other hand, revenue was up 10.3% year on year, to <strong>USD 6.2 billion<\/strong>. Cecaf\u00e9\u2019s executives stressed that 2021 saw a smaller crop due to the two-year cycle of the coffee plant, which usually produces more in one year and more in the following crop, and the impacts of the weather on the coffee plantations of Brazil.<\/p>\n<p>In this context, the price of the coffee bag is rising close to unprecedented levels. \u201cWith the average price of exports at USD 154.63, one of the highest of the series. These factors, together with a strong dollar compared to real, benefit a higher revenue for Brazil,\u201d Cecaf\u00e9 chair Nicolas Rueda was quoted as saying in a statement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Output<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday (18), Brazil government crop agency Conab made public an estimate for the 2022 coffee harvest. The current harvest will have more plants producing, particularly of the Arabica varieties.<\/p>\n<p>The harvest volume is expected to increase by 16.8% from last year, to 55.7 million 60-kg bags. Conab said that the 2022 output will still suffer from weather conditions like the draught and frost that were seen particularly from July to August 2021. These affected mainly the coffee plantations in the states of Minas Gerais, the country\u2019s top producer, and S\u00e3o Paulo and Paran\u00e1, where the cultivation is mainly of Arabica.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, the species could have a 23.4% higher output from the previous crop, estimated at 38.7 million bags.
