Multitalented artist Hosam Omran, born in Jordan to a family of Palestinians, came to Brazil in November 2021 for an artistic residency, first at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.residenciasaojoao.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">S\u00e3o Jo\u00e3o Residency<\/a>, a farm in the countryside of the state of Rio de Janeiro, and later, at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kaaysa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kaays\u00e1 Art Residency<\/a>, on the north coast of S\u00e3o Paulo state.<\/p>\n<p>During the four months in the country, Omran finished his book, a <strong>graphic novel<\/strong> in Arabic with pen drawings, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.behance.net\/gallery\/92167101\/Hotel-Cairo-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hotel Cairo<\/a>, and exhibited it at the farm in Rio de Janeiro. He also formed a band that mixes Brazilian and Arab sounds, <strong>Jeera<\/strong>, alongside Pitter Rocha and singer Lou Pipa, both Brazilians. Omran sings, plays ukulele, <strong>daff<\/strong> (an Arab tambourine of Egyptian origin), and guitar.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_308886\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-308886\" style=\"width: 228px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-308886 \" src=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/hosamomran3-239x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"228\" height=\"286\" srcset=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/hosamomran3-239x300.jpg 239w, https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/hosamomran3.jpg 455w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 228px) 100vw, 228px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-308886\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>The Palestinian cause is one of the themes of his works<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At the age of 30, the Palestinian, who has a major in Art Direction gathered his talents in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Httnd1AEmUk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">animated short film<\/a> and is looking for a publisher for his graphic novel, with versions in Arabic and Portuguese.<\/p>\n<p>This is not the first time Omran has come to Brazil. He was in the country in 2018, before the pandemic, for two weeks. \u201cIt was my first trip outside the Middle East,\u201d he told ANBA. \u201cI came here, and it was very brief, so I had to come back and really live this experience,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Omran\u2019s parents were expelled from <strong>Palestine<\/strong> in 1948, and then again in 1967, he said. The family lived in Yemen during the artist\u2019s childhood, and in 2014 they had to move to Jordan also due to conflict in the region. Hosam Omran has only been to Palestine once, when he was seven years old. He was never able to return.<\/p>\n<p>At the <a href=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/residencia-em-boicucanga-abre-edital-para-artistas-arabes\/\">Kaays\u00e1<\/a> residency, he recorded songs and connected with nature, the beach, and waterfalls. \u201cEvery experience in Brazil was quite different. We don\u2019t have this green as you have here. The people are truly kind, and there\u2019s a very high level of awareness about the Palestinian cause I didn\u2019t think I would find, and I\u2019m very grateful to be able to see that here,\u201d he said. The stay at Kaays\u00e1 was supported by the <strong>Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce<\/strong> (ABCC).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_308883\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-308883\" style=\"width: 257px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-308883 \" src=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/hosamomran2-300x282.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"257\" height=\"242\" srcset=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/hosamomran2-300x282.jpg 300w, https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/hosamomran2.jpg 536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 257px) 100vw, 257px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-308883\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Omran album cover art<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Omran is studying Portuguese and said, for him, the language is easier to pronounce than others. His favorite place in Brazil was <strong>Boi\u00e7ucanga beach<\/strong>, where Kaays\u00e1 is located. \u201cI connected a lot with the place, recorded songs, made the art for the album I\u2019m about to release, and the whole experience was very meaningful to me,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJeera\u201d means \u201cto become a neighbor\u201d in Arabic, and the artist said the name was chosen for the band because he and his colleagues lived very close together in the artist residency. \u201cWe will continue with the project, I intend to apply for other residencies, and I want to go on tour in Brazil with the band,\u201d he said.
