The individual exhibition by artist Susana Barros will open on Tuesday (26th) and should continue until August 1st at the Cultural Space of the Pitágoras school.

The artist works with the same geometrical shapes, lively colours and symmetry as in the drawings found in the tombs, sarcophaguses and temples that were built thousands of years ago in Egypt. Susana has been developing the items for the exhibition since last November. The degree of perfection of the paintings is such that, according to the artist, people ask if they were really hand painted. “People look at the photographs and think my work is made using a computer,” she said.

The fascination with Egyptian and Islamic art dates back a long time. The artist explains that approximately 10 years ago when her daughter started taking belly dancing lessons and studying the Arabic language, she began doing more research on the culture. In 2005, Susana and her daughter Mariana spent one month in Egypt, where the artist got to know the country’s history and art up close.

Susana’s exhibition will also have an Egyptian corner. “I am going to include all of the works, papyruses, statues and replicas that I brought from the country,” said the artist, who is not going to sell any work during the exhibition. “This is a cultural exhibition,” added Susana, who expects visits from students and the general public.

According to Susana, this will be her first large exhibition. The first one, which featured a smaller number of items, was held in 2007 in the city of São Paulo. Now, the aim is to take her works to Egypt.

Profile

Born in Belo Horizonte, the capital of Minas Gerais, Susana Barros has always loved colours and shapes. At age 10, Susana was already making things out of clay, especially thematic masks. In 1985, she earned a degree in Interior Architecture at the Higher School of Fine Arts (Fuma-Esap). Always studying art, the fine artist specialised in paintings. Presently, the colours that prevail in her works are the same as those that were used in Egyptian drawings, which were painted using stones and gold.

Service

Susana Barros Exhibition
Date: May 26th to August 1st
Place: Cultural Space of the Pitágoras school, Belo Horizonte (state of Minas Gerais)
Address: Santa Madalena Sofia street, 25.
