S\u00e3o Paulo \u2013 From the Brazilian state of Tocantins, plastic artist N\u00fabio Cunha Brito<\/strong> had a work exhibited in May this year in Dubai, United Arab Emirates<\/strong>. The \u2018Ciganos\u2019 [\u2018Gypsies\u2019] canvas was awarded during its exhibition. Index Dubai 2022 International Fair of Furniture & Interior Design featured works by artists<\/strong> from 14 different countries and was hosted by the International Association of Artists and Partners \u2013 AIA ArtCom Expo<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Born and raised in the Gurupi region of Tocantins<\/strong>, Brito has a consolidated career in communication and journalism; he is also a writer with two published titles, but in 2019 he resumed his vocation for the arts, which he has had since he was from 12 years old. \u201cWhen I turned 40, I was in Palmas, and I felt a great desire to perform, so I bought canvas and paints and started painting,\u201d he said in a telephone interview with ANBA.<\/p>\n

The artist could not attend the show in Dubai but received event records. In the background, the \u2018Ciganos\u2019 [\u2018Gypsies\u2019] canvas<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>With canvas and oil paint<\/strong> in hand, the artist began to outline and color different scenes. According to him, most are the result of an intuitive production. \u201cSo I was producing these works, and since then, I could see there was a transformation from canvas to canvas. I could clearly feel these intuitions were part of this process of developing my art,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n

Intuitive art<\/strong><\/p>\n

Through this production method, paintings such as \u2018A Rendeira de Bilro\u2019 [\u2018The Lacemaker\u2019] and \u2018Recanto das Flores\u2019 [\u2018Flower Nook\u2019] were born, and both were also exhibited abroad. The first was awarded in Paris, France, and the second was exhibited in London, United Kingdom.<\/p>\n

The exhibitions were also held by the ArtCom curator, who got to know Brito\u2019s works in 2019 through a mutual friend. \u201cWhen [the first canvas] was awarded as one of the best Brazilian works, it was a surprise; I didn\u2019t expect it. Then came the opportunity in London. I participated again and managed to have my canvas placed among the top three in the exhibition,\u201d he recalled.<\/p>\n

Then also came the invitation to participate in the event in the UAE and a new award. But the artist recalls the efforts to take the paintings to foreign exhibitions still do not have sponsorship. \u201cI\u2019ve been doing everything with my own resources, but I\u2019m looking for support to make future exhibitions possible,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

One of Brito\u2019s priorities for the future is to help art become more accessible, especially in his state. \u201cI really want to be able to teach classes, offer my knowledge in some way to bring art to more people. And so more people know an artist from Tocantins can have his works in such distant places,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n
