If the forecast from IBGE proves true, this will be an all-time record, up 3.4% or 8.7 million from 2021.

According to IBGE Agriculture manager Carlos Alfredo Guedes, the leading product that is pushing the record crop is maize, particularly second crop corn, up 35.5% from the previous year. “Output is recovering from 2021’s climate problems such as lack of rainfall. This recovery helps explain the 2022 output. Furthermore, an increase in the area of second crop corn has been seen, encouraged by the good prices that farmers have seen in recent years,” Guedes was quoted as saying in a statement.

Wheat

Wheat production is expected to reach 9.6 million tonnes, down 0.9% from August and up 23% from 2021. According to the Agriculture manager, wheat is a product whose output is not self-sufficient. “We consume approximately 12 to 13 million tonnes, so we still have to import some but far less than in previous years. This output of 9.6 million tonnes is a record high for Brazil. Ukraine and Russia are two major wheat exporters, and prices are high due to the war,” he added.

Coffee and soybean

According to the survey, the 2022 Brazilian coffee output is estimated to reach 3.1 million tonnes, or 52.3 million 60-kg bags, down 2.7% from August and up 6.6% from 2021. Brazil’s leading commodity, soybean output is estimated to reach 119.5 million tonnes, up 0.6% month on month, but down 11.4% year on year.

Translated by Guilherme Miranda

©Igor Stevanovic/Science Photo Library/AFP

Brazilian cereal, legume and oilseed output is expected to reach an all-time record in 2022, up 8.7 million tonnes from 2021, IBGE reported.
