S\u00e3o Paulo \u2013 The first novel by Iraqi author Dunya Mikhail<\/strong> has appeared in Brazilian Portuguese. The Bird Tattoo<\/em> <\/strong>was launched in Brazil by publisher Tabla in late 2022, translated by Beatriz Negreiros Gemignani.<\/p>\n

It is a powerful and sweeping novel that tells the story of Helin, a Yazidi woman is kidnapped and held hostage as a sex slave by ISIS in northern Iraq. With the help of a beekeeper, Abdullah, Helin manages to escape from the clutches of the organization and faces the challenge of rebuilding her life.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a story about the cruel persecution of the Yazidi people. At the same time, and with a strongly poetic language, the novel sheds light on the culture and traditions of her people, its immense strength and resilience. The book was Shortlisted for the International Prize for Arabic Fiction.<\/p>\n

Dunya Mikhail was born in 1965 in Baghdad, Iraq. After graduating with a BA from the University of Baghdad and receiving her MA from Wayne State University, she worked as a journalist and translator and dedicated herself to poetry<\/strong>, the genre she is better known for.<\/p>\n

Mikhail is now seen as one of the most important contemporary Arab poets. In 1995, she fled Iraq, going first to Jordan and then eventually to the United States, where she currently works as a special lecturer of Arabic at Oakland University in Michigan.<\/p>\n

In 2020, Dunya Mikhail was awarded the UNESCO-Sharjah Prize for Arab Culture.<\/p>\n

On Thursday (26) at 7 pm (BRT), the publishing house will hold a chat<\/strong> with the author, who\u2019s now one of Iraq\u2019s most important poets. Mikhail will talk about her works and her career as a writer and the story that led to the book, a true story about Yazidi women she documented.<\/p>\n

Tabla invited journalists Paula Carvalho to talk to Mikhail. The livestream will be available on the publishing house\u2019s YouTube<\/a> channel.<\/p>\n
