This was one of the proposals presented at seminar The 2014 World Cup – Normatisation of Sustainable Works, which brought together businessmen in several areas of the Senate over two days and ended on Thursday (17), at the initiative of the Environment, Consumer Defence and Inspection and Control Commission.

Defence of biofuels as a source of energy for the Cup was in the hands of Silvio de Oliveira, a maker of lorry engines who established a biofuel mill with capacity for production of 15,000 litres a day in the interior of São Paulo, for own consumption, using the fat of chickens slaughtered at a meat packing plant owned by the group.

According to Silvio Oliveira, events like the World Cup matches do not depend on supply of convention electric energy by companies in the group, due to the risk of sudden outages. In one of these cases, the emergency generators would take at least 15 seconds to return to energy supply, which would cause losses to the transmission. Thus, the proposal of biofuel energy generators would supply the main energy and the conventional system would be a backup.

"This would be very practical, safer and would generate peace of mind to all those working and watching the matches,” said the businessman. He estimates that the World Cup would consume around 2 billion litres of biofuel, in case fully powered by this kind of energy source. According to him, there would be no problem for this because, today, the country currently produces 5% (2.2 billion litres) of biofuel among the 44 billion litres of fuel consumed each year, planning to expand this percentage to 20% in future, maybe getting close to this volume by 2014.

The objective of the seminar was to find suggestions for elaboration of a bill defining norms for sustainability of works turned to promotion of the 2014 World Cup and other international competitions to be promoted in Brazil in coming years, like the Confederations Cup, in 2011, and the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, in 2016. One of the speakers showed the advantage of lamps that economise energy in public lighting and at environments like football stadiums.

*Translated by Mark Ament

Soy biofuel may be a source of energy for the 2014 World Cup matches in Brazil.
