S\u00e3o Paulo \u2013 Brazilian agribusiness exports to the Middle East, where some Arab countries may be found, grew 14% in the month of April as against the same month in 2009, according to figures disclosed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply. Sector revenues with sales to the region totalled US$ 505 million, 8.6% of the total.<\/p>\n
Saudi Arabia was the eighth main buyer of Brazilian agribusiness products in April, with imports of US$ 172 million and growth of 32% over the same month in 2009. The second Arab country that imported most agricultural and livestock products was Egypt, in the twentieth position in the general ranking, with purchases of US$ 61.6 million and growth of 27.5%.<\/p>\n
In general, agribusiness exports generated to the country US$ 6.3 billion in April, 16.2% more than in the same period last year. The value is record for the historic series for months of April. The performance was boosted by the sugar and alcohol complex, forestry products, the soy complex, meats, leather and its products, coffee, tobacco and live animals.<\/p>\n
Exports in the sugar and alcohol sector were the highlight as they reached US$ 677 million, growing 35.9%. According to figures supplied by the Ministry of Agriculture, the movement refers to higher sugar and ethanol prices.<\/p>\n
Among the destinations for the products, apart from the Middle East, there was also good performance in sales to the European Union, with growth of 3.2%, to Asia, with expansion of 14.2%, the Nafta, with 25.9%, Western Europe, to which sales doubled, and the Mercosur, with growth of 33.8%. In the accumulated result for the year up to April, exports totalled US$ 20.8 billion, with growth of 15.4%.<\/p>\n
