The data were culled from the survey Brazilian Software Market – Overview and Trends, disclosed by the Brazilian Software Companies Association (Abes).

In 2009, the Brazilian market was the world’s 12th largest and recorded a turnover of US$ 15.3 billion, representing growth of 2.4% compared with 2008. The software segment accounted for US$ 5.4 billion of that total, whereas services accounted for US$ 9.9 billion. During the same period, the software and services market turnover worldwide was US$ 880 billion, representing growth of 0.89%.

The United States were the country with the highest turnover, at US$ 349.7 billion, followed by Japan (US$ 71.7 billion), the United Kingdom (US$ 69.4 billion) and Germany (US$ 59.8 billion).

Worldwide, the Information Technology (IT) market recorded a turnover of US$ 1.43 trillion in 2009, a 2.7% decline over the previous year. Latin America, however, recorded growth of 6.5% using the same basis of comparison, with a turnover of US$ 65 billion.

In Brazil, the IT market generated revenues of US$ 30.5 billion, a figure equivalent to 2.1% of the global market and 47% of the Latin American market. A total of 11.3 million computers were sold last year, and the country had 65 million Internet users.

For this year, the survey forecasts growth of 6.5% in the Brazilian IT market, higher than the forecast rates for Latin America, which is 6.3%, and for the global market, which is 3.5%.The segments that should grow the most are software and services.

“The expansion of cloud computing, which should see demand triple over the coming five years; the demand for business analysis and intelligence applications, which should grow by more than 10% in 2010; significant growth in laptop computer and smart phone sales, driven by the rising number of users; and opportunities created by the advent of Digital TV, are a few pillars that should stand out in this and the next few years,” said in a press release the chairman of the Abes, Gérson Schmitt.

Industry

There are 8,500 software and services companies in Brazil, 76.5% of which operate in software development, distribution and sales. There are 2,100 companies dedicated solely to production and development, being 56.4% small and 37.6% micro-businesses.

*Translated by Gabriel Pomerancblum

There was growth of 7% last year in comparison with 2008.
