According to the projection of the Brazilian Electric and Electronic Industry Association (Abinee), the sector should post 125,643 billion reals (US$ 71.5 billion) in revenues this year. In 2009, revenues totalled 111.839 billion reals (US$ 63.6 billion). The forecast was culled from the survey The Electric and Electronic Industry in 2020 – Detailing and Proposal Updating, disclosed today (5th) by the Abinee.

The fields that grew the most were computers, industrial equipment and household appliances, which increased by 15%.

According to the Abinee, computer sector revenues totalled 35.27 billion Brazilian reals (US$ 20 billion) in 2009 and should reach 40.4 billion reals (US$ 23 billion) in 2010. The industrial equipment segment, which posted revenues of 15 billion reals (US$ 8.5 billion) last year, should post 17.18 billion reals (US$ 9.7 billion) this year. Household utensils revenues should reach 15.381 billion reals (US$ 8.7 billion) in 2010, as against 13.427 reals (US$ 7.6 billion) in 2009.

“Computers remain the leading segment,” claims the coordinator of the workgroup in charge of the study, Aluizio Byrro. “Our gola is to have electric and electronic industry revenues go from 4% to 7% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2020,” he added.

He mentioned once again the deficit that the country has in technician and engineer training and the “significant losses” caused by the exchange rate. “Besides, we are concerned with the need for heavy investment, especially in the components sector,” he claimed.

“The situation remains very good for companies in fields linked to computers, cellular phones and household appliances, but imports, which are one of the main concerns of our sector, have been harmed. After a poorly implemented market opening in the 1990s, approximately 200 companies disappeared,” said the president of the Abinee, Humberto Barbato.

“We have lost much space as a result of imports,” said Byrro, who calls for the federal government’s National Broadband Plan to be “made a reality” so as to lower risks for domestic companies.

The Electric and Electronic Industry in 2020 – Detailing and Proposal Updating survey is a result of debates between companies affiliated with the Abinee and government authorities. The document brings reflections on the challenges facing the industry over the next 10 years, and presents proposals that may promote the strengthening of the country’s electric and electronic industry.

*Translated by Gabriel Pomerancblum

Sectorial association Abinee expects the sector to post revenues of over US$ 71 billion in 2010.
