He owns some 300 ancient pieces from ancient Egypt, the Holy Land, and the Roman Empire.

Born and raised for most of his childhood in the town of Bom Jesus, Rio Grande do Sul, the collector says he didn’t have many opportunities to visit museums. So he didn’t know much about the history of ancient civilizations. Everything changed after he got Palestinian coins from 1924. Musa had only five years when he received the gift from his grandfather.

Maisur Musa: Interest in ancient objects started early

“For me the greatest significance of having these pieces is the magic they do for children. My collections change lives, but the audiences they attract the most are the children. I see that my exhibitions make them evolve culturally and want to seek knowledge, as it happened to me when I got the coins from my grandfather,” recounted the Brazilian.

After that, the life of the Brazilian-born son of a Palestinian father changed completely. From his early teenage years to his adulthood, he visited antique shops. His move to Palestine at 13 with his family and his later visit to Egypt at 17 raised his interest for other civilizations. A good part of the collection was made up of purchases in antique shops in cities like Jerusalem, London, Paris, and New York.

As time passed, the collector started promoting his collections, and he eventually caught the attention of exhibition organizers. Since 1995, when he participated in his first exhibit in Florianópolis, he never stopped, and he has been in over 90 shows in Brazil. Although he has received many invitations from outside the country, Musa gives preference to Brazilians.

“I like to exhibit in Brazil because we have a shortcoming in culture. I’ve participated in exhibits in nearly every state of the country, except maybe for one or two,” he said.

Quick facts:

Exhibit Egito Antigo
July 27 to August 27, 2023
Shopping Pátio Paulista
Rua Treze de Maio, 1947 – São Paulo, Brazil
Free admission (you)
Find out more

Report by Rebecca Vettore, especially for ANBA

Translation by Guilherme Miranda

©Danielle Braido

Personal archive

Over 5,000 people have already visited the Shopping Pátio Paulista in São Paulo to see a show featuring pieces on Egypt.
