{"id":369382,"date":"2024-06-27T15:11:56","date_gmt":"2024-06-27T18:11:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/?p=369382"},"modified":"2024-06-27T16:25:29","modified_gmt":"2024-06-27T19:25:29","slug":"a-moroccan-at-the-sao-paulo-biennial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/en\/a-moroccan-at-the-sao-paulo-biennial\/","title":{"rendered":"A Moroccan at the S\u00e3o Paulo Biennial"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>S\u00e3o Paulo \u2013 Born in Casablanca, Morocco, the director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifa.de\/en\/art\/ifa-gallery-berlin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ifa-Galerie Berlin<\/a> in Germany, Alya Sebti, is one of the curators of the 36<sup>th<\/sup> <a href=\"https:\/\/bienal.org.br\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">S\u00e3o Paulo Biennial <\/a>, which is scheduled for September 2025 in its pavilion at the Ibirapuera Park. And I keep coming back whenever I can. There is a very special connection for me, as a Moroccan-born raised in Casablanca, with S\u00e3o Paulo. I can\u2019t really explain why, but it somehow feels like home away from home.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe scale is obviously different but I feel so many resonances between these two cities, the energy, rhythm, light,\u201d says Sebti, who has lived in Berlin since 2014.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The biennial&#8217;s chief curator will be Cameroon\u2019s Bonaventure Soh Bejeng Ndikung, who assembled a conceptual team as his cocurators. Besides Alya Sebti, the team consists of Switzerland\u2019s Anna Roberta Goetz and Brazil\u2019s Thiago de Paula Souza and Keyna Eleison. Germany\u2019s Henriette Gallus will oversee communication and strategy. Other members of the team, the curatorial proposal and other partners will be announced over the course of this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">S\u00e3o Paulo Biennial<strong>, a space of shared knowledge<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The non-commercial art space ifa-Galerie Berlin she has directed since 2016 belongs to the ifa \u2013 Institut f\u00fcr Auslandsbeziehungen [Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She developed there, starting 2017, the <em>Untie to tie \u2013 on colonial legacies and contemporary societies<\/em>, a research and exhibition project that discusses the colonial legacies, movement, migration and environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The biennial format, Sebti says, is very important in her praxis, as she worked with several biennial in her past \u2013 the Marrakech Biennale in Morocco in 2014, the Dakar Biennale in Senegal in 2018, the Manifesta Biennial edition in Marseille, France, in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>I was fascinated (and still am!) by this unique institution of such a scale that is so deeply rooted in its territory while opening up conversations with the rest of the world<\/p><cite>Alya Sebti, cocurator of the 36th S\u00e3o Paulo Biennale<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSince I participated in 2014 in the World Biennial Forum during the 31<sup>st<\/sup> edition of the S\u00e3o Paulo Biennial, it has been a dream of mine to be in the curatorial team of this biennial.
