{"id":370231,"date":"2024-07-16T13:45:17","date_gmt":"2024-07-16T16:45:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/?p=370231"},"modified":"2024-07-16T13:48:30","modified_gmt":"2024-07-16T16:48:30","slug":"iraq-invites-private-companies-to-operate-airport","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/en\/iraq-invites-private-companies-to-operate-airport\/","title":{"rendered":"Iraq invites private companies to operate airport"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Baghdad \u2013 Iraq\u2019s authorities called on international private sector companies to bid for the expansion and operation of Baghdad\u2019s international airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In September, the government signed an agreement with the World Bank\u2019s International Finance Corporation (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifc.org\/en\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IFC<\/a>) to invite private companies to upgrade the country\u2019s main airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Iraq \u201cis launching a two-stage public tender to select a private partner to rehabilitate, expand, finance, operate, and maintain Baghdad International Airport under a long-term Public-Private Partnership (PPP) contract,\u201d according to the official document calling for bidders and seen by AFP Tuesday (16).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is the \u201cfirst time that the Iraqi government, in cooperation with the IFC, opens its airports to private international investment,\u201d Farhad Alaaldin, the prime minister\u2019s foreign affairs adviser, told AFP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is \u201ca step that will elevate the aviation sector to international standards\u201d, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The deadline to submit bids is September 12, and the winner \u201cis expected to modernize and rehabilitate the airport infrastructure, expand passenger and cargo terminal facilities&#8230; and operate and maintain the airport in line with international best practice,\u201d the document added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The IFC, according to the document, \u201cis acting as the lead transaction advisor for this PPP project\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The IFC\u2019s involvement, it is hoped, will \u201cgive more confidence to the world class companies to bid\u201d, Alaaldin said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIraq is open for business and inward investment is on the rise,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Iraq&#8217;s a<strong>ir demand<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Last month, Prime Minister Mohamed Shia al-Sudani\u2019s media office said an IFC study showed \u201ca compound annual growth rate of 15.7% in air traffic\u201d in recent years, with over 3.4 million passengers arriving in Baghdad in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It said the IFC proposed building a new terminal to increase airport capacity to up to nine million passengers per year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Read more:<\/em><br><a href=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/en\/uae-saudi-arabia-iraq-more-poultry-from-brazil\/\">Syria launches tender for 5 locomotives<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Reproduction is prohibited<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Translated by Guilherme Miranda<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"credits-overlay\" data-target=\".wp-image-370228\">\u00a9Murtadha Al-Sudani\/Anadolu Agency\/AFP<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Through an agreement with an international corporation, Iraqi authorities are calling foreign companies to bid for the expansion and operation of Baghdad\u2019s airport.
