The films showcase contemporary cinema from countries in the Middle East and North Africa, focusing on social contexts, conflicts, and the questions that shape the daily lives of people and characters. The festival will include a debate and the participation of Portuguese director Carlos Gomes, who will present the premiere of \u201cThe Poet King.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icarabe.org\/cinema\/19a-mostra-mundo-arabe-de-cinema-com-11-filmes-ineditos-e-estreia-internacional-edicao-2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">festival<\/a> is organized by the Institute for Arab Culture (Icarabe) and the Social Service of commerce (SESC), and sponsored by the <strong>Arab-Brazilian Chamber of Commerce<\/strong> (ABCC), Arab House, and the Sleep Institute.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"554\" src=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/imortais-1024x554.jpg\" alt=\"\u201cImmortals,\u201d a film by Arab Maja Tschumi, will be preceded by a debate.\" class=\"wp-image-372780\" style=\"width:346px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/imortais-1024x554.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/imortais-600x324.jpg 600w, https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/imortais-150x81.jpg 150w, https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/imortais-768x415.jpg 768w, https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/imortais-1536x830.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/imortais-450x243.jpg 450w, https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/imortais-1200x649.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/anba.com.br\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/imortais.jpg 1998w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u201cImmortals,\u201d a film by Maja Tschumi, will be preceded by a debate.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>In addition to the film screenings, two other events will round up the program: a debate held on Sunday (1) immediately after the screening of the film <strong>A Burden<\/strong> at 7:05 p.m., and before the screening of <strong>Immortals.<\/strong> The screening of <strong>A Burden<\/strong> will be at 5:30 p.m., and <strong>Immortals<\/strong> will start at 8:30 p.m. The debate will be moderated by Laura Di Pietro, Editorial Director at Tabla publishing house, and feature congresswoman S\u00e2mia Bomfim and Renan Quinalha, Associate Coordinator of the Trans Unit at the Federal University of S\u00e3o Paulo (Unifesp).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also at the festival, Portuguese director Carlos Gomes will attend the world premiere of his film <strong>The Poet King<\/strong> on Saturday (31) at 5:30 p.m. This documentary takes a journey through the history of poet-king Al-Mu&#8217;tamid, who ruled a territory in the south of the Iberian Peninsula in the 11th century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The film to open the festival\u2019s program is <strong>The Teacher,<\/strong> at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday (29), with free tickets distributed starting at 6:30 p.m. <strong>The Teacher<\/strong> (2023) is a production from Palestine, Qatar, and the United Kingdom, directed by Farah Nabulsi. It portrays a Palestinian teacher trying to recover after a tragic incident involving his son amidst a tense reality of conflict. The Palestinian British director was previously nominated for an Oscar for her short film <strong>The Present<\/strong> (2020).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The contexts and challenges of Arab society<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Arthur Jafet, board member of the ABCC and curator of the festival, was quoted as saying in a statement released by Icarabe that the selected films \u201cshed light on\u201d the diversity of the contemporary Arab world. \u201cAt a time of turmoil in the Middle East and anti-war protests in public spaces and universities in the United States, our 19th Arab World Film Festival is more contemporary and significant than ever. Over these years, the Brazilian audience has come to appreciate the vibrant culture of the Arab world, which addresses issues that are so relevant and pertinent to Brazilian society,\u201d she says.
