S\u00e3o Paulo \u2013 Ambassador Nelson Antonio Tabajara de Oliveira has taken over as head of Brazil\u2019s Foreign Ministry\u2019s office in S\u00e3o Paulo (Eresp<\/a>) and has begun dialogue with the trade chambers in the city. As a first step, he visited the Arab-Brazilian Chamber of Commerce<\/strong> (ABCC<\/a>) headquarters in S\u00e3o Paulo on Monday afternoon (17).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Having served at the Organization of American States (OAS), the UN, in Chile, Italy, and other places, and more recently as Brazil\u2019s ambassador in Stockholm, Sweden, and Vienna, Austria, the diplomat expresses great satisfaction with his new role, which he took on at the end of January this year. According to Oliveira, in an interview with ANBA, this is a position he has not held before, as it is his first time taking a leadership role within Brazil itself.<\/p>\n\n\n

\u201cI have a strong connection to S\u00e3o Paulo, and I really like it as a city. My father\u2019s entire family is from here. So, I also have blood ties to S\u00e3o Paulo. It\u2019s an extraordinary city\u2014I think it\u2019s one of the best cities in South America,\u201d says Oliveira. Born in Rio de Janeiro, the diplomat studied Philosophy and Architecture before joining the Rio Branco Institute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In S\u00e3o Paulo, the Eresp represents the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to local authorities and organizations, including in Brazil\u2019s international trade relations; acts as an interface with consulates; provides support to authorities passing through the city, including those in transit to other destinations in South America; among other responsibilities. Within this scope, one of the goals of the new head of Eresp is to visit the chambers of commerce in S\u00e3o Paulo to assess the need for engagement. According to him, there are over 40 chambers of commerce in the city.<\/p>\n\n\n

\u201cThese chambers are obviously an indication of the very dynamic relationship (Brazil has with these countries),\u201d Oliveira told ANBA. The ABCC represents the 22 countries that make up the Arab League. \u201cAll of this reflects the importance of Brazil\u2019s trade with the rest of the world,\u201d said the diplomat, referring to the presence of trade chambers in the country, adding that this is also a facet of Brazil\u2019s international relations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In regard to the Arab world, Oliveira says Brazil has a strong relationship with the countries in the region and recalls the South America-Arab Countries Summit (ASPA), whose first edition took place during President Luiz In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva\u2019s first term in Brazil. The summit fostered a strong connection between the regions. \u201cIt created a great alignment; I believe it was that summit that showed how Brazil and the Arab countries can be great partners,\u201d he says. He also believes that the Arab Brazilian population helps bring Brazil closer to Arab nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the ABCC meeting, the ambassador was received by president William Adib Dib Jr., international relations vice president and secretary-general Mohamad Mourad, and institutional relations director Fernanda Baltazar. Oliveira visited the institution accompanied by diplomats Rodrigo Papa and Raphael Gon\u00e7alves de Fran\u00e7a. The ambassador presented the work of the Eresp and listened to a presentation about the ABCC\u2019s activities, especially those focused on trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
