S\u00e3o Paulo \u2013 This week in Geneva, Switzerland, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (Unctad) will promote a public symposium on the theme \u201cMaking trade and finance work for the people and the planet.\u201d The event, according to the institution, is meant to be a forum for debate on key matters in the international agenda this year and in the next.<\/p>\n
The symposium, according to the UN agency, will bring together representatives of the civil society, the private sector, the press, international organizations, government officials, parliament members and scholars.<\/p>\n
The two main topics of discussion will be \u201cGlobal and regional initiatives for financial and monetary reforms for sustainable development\u201d and \u201cMaking the transition to a fair and equitable green economy.\u201d<\/p>\n
In the former, the discussion will focus on the necessary initiatives to prevent new international crises and have trade and the financial system work for full employment. In the latter, the intention is to discuss how to make a transition into the so-called \u201cgreen\u201d economy, considering sustainable development and the eradication of poverty. <\/p>\n
The organization expects the meeting to align trends for important conferences due in 2011 and 2012, such as the next G20 summit, the Rio +20 and the 13th Unctad.<\/p>\n
