The ambassador of Brazil to Egypt, Cesário Melantonio Neto, is in charge of talks with the rebels who took over power in Libya. In the sidelines, the government of Brazil maintains dialogue with the heads of other countries in the region.

A spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry, Tovar Nunes, said on Tuesday (23) that Brazil supports any measures aimed at political and social stabilisation of Libya, as well as alternatives to end the conflict in the region.

“The transition government in Libya cannot be vengeful, it must seek the route to serenity, respecting [the principle] that political measures must be guided by the Libyans themselves. There is no way of comparing what happened in Libya to [what has taken place in] any other country living moments of tension,” said Tovar.

According to the spokesperson, Brazil is traditionally against decisions that, somehow, violate human rights. “We are following what is going on in Libya confident that stability will be returned.”

The topic was the theme of a meeting between Foreign minister Antonio Patriota and the Foreign Affairs minister of the Philippines, Albert del Rosario.

*Translated by Mark Ament

This information was disclosed by Itamaraty spokesperson Tovar Nunes.
