The information was supplied by the UN’s special adviser to Libya, Ian Martin. He referred to the role that should be played by the National Transitional Council (NTC), which is controlled by the opposition and rules over the majority of the country.

Since last Saturday (3rd), Martin is in Tripoli to gather information on the NTC’s needs in order to help re-establish stability and safety in Libya over the next few months. According to him, it is still “too early to provide details” on how the transition will come to pass in what concerns the electoral system and the establishing of an electoral committee.

Last week, the opposition announced that it intends to hold presidential elections in Libya 20 months after it ascends to power in Libya. It will be the first election in 42 years. The Libyan leader Muammar Khadafi stayed in power for over four decades. Parliamentary elections are also forecasted to take place.

Last Sunday (4th) in Moscow, Russia, the Brazilian minister of Foreign Relations, Antonio Patriota, stated that there is a “systemic concern,” on Brazil’s part, regarding the consolidation of democracy in Libya. According to him, this is why the Brazilian government is waiting for the UN to recognize the opposition as being in charge of the transitional process in the country.

*Translated by Gabriel Pomerancblum

The United Nations are at the disposal of the Libyan transitional government, according to an advisor to the organization sent to the Arab country.

[106

0":"post-39197","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","6":"category-foreign-affairs
The United Nations are at the disposal of the Libyan transitional government, according to an advisor to the organization sent to the Arab country.
["GET
