The president of the Rio de Janeiro chapter of the Brazilian Franchising Association (ABF-RJ), Fátima Rocha, informed that 2,000 brands are operating in Brazil, at a total of 86,300 franchised units. The state of Rio de Janeiro hosts 10,500 such units.

According to Fátima, industries with the highest growth potential in Brazil are tourism, hotels, language teaching, food, beauty, clothing and footwear.

Another segment which has started becoming attractive as a result of the social ascent of the middle and lower middle classes is what is known as microfranchises, which require no commercial establishment. “This has been a real nice option for this niche of entrepreneurs. People can operate from their own homes,” said Fátima.

With a total of 777,000 employees and revenues of 76 billion reals (US$ 44.2 billion) last year –20.4% more than last year – the Brazilian franchising industry is expecting to increase the number of franchisees in coming years.

This Thursday (15th), Fátima attended the opening of the 5th Rio Franchising Business fair, at Riocentro.
