According to aeronautical engineer and air transport economics specialist Adalberto Febeliano, this trend reflects growing demand from South American passengers—not just Brazilians—for destinations beyond the Arab countries. Emirates is based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Qatar Airways in Qatar, and Royal Air Maroc in Morocco.

“This growth is not just for flights from Brazil to the UAE or to Qatar but also includes passengers traveling to the UAE to connect to flights to Japan, China, Singapore, and other destinations. Airlines are certainly noticing an increase in traffic from Latin America to Asia,” Febeliano told ANBA.

Emirates plane: The Dubai-based airline will offer daily flights to Rio de Janeiro as it does to São Paulo

He says the airlines have found a hub in São Paulo for their flights, but many passengers come from other Latin American countries to São Paulo before continuing their journeys. As an example of this connectivity, the specialist notes that Arab airlines maintain codeshare agreements with local carriers.

For example, Gol has a partnership with Royal Air Maroc. Etihad, the Abu Dhabi-based airline that flew to São Paulo between 2013 and 2017, partners with Azul in Brazil, with the agreement allowing points exchanges between their loyalty programs.

In July, Emirates announced it will operate daily flights to Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires, Argentina, starting in October. Currently, it offers five weekly flights to these destinations, in addition to daily service to São Paulo. Qatar Airways is increasing its weekly flights between Doha and São Paulo from 14 to 17. Royal Air Maroc confirmed to ANBA that it will operate four weekly flights from December, rising to five to six weekly flights in 2026, when it will also begin service to Rio de Janeiro.

Royal Air Maroc’s Brazil country manager, Othman Baba, confirmed to ANBA that the airline will operate four weekly flights to São Paulo starting December 2. Since December last year, when it resumed operations in the country after the pandemic, the airline has flown three times a week between Casablanca and São Paulo.

However, the airline has further plans for its operations in Brazil. The executive revealed that by 2026, the goal is to operate six weekly flights to São Paulo and, also by next year, begin service to Rio de Janeiro. This route could, like Emirates’, extend to Buenos Aires, which is still under consideration. Baba says São Paulo is a dynamic destination, the “financial heart” of Brazil and South America, and that the airline aims to serve as a “bridge” between this region and other destinations it serves.

“Brazil is a very important destination for three reasons: First, because it is the largest destination in South America, with major airlines based in São Paulo. For us, it’s a gateway to Europe, Africa, and Asia,” he says. “The second reason is that we believe in fostering tourism between the two countries. Moroccans love Brazil, identify with it and want to visit Rio de Janeiro. And the third reason is that we want to foster business. A direct route makes it easier to conduct business between the two countries,” Baba adds.

He explains that the airline’s ability to meet its goals and demand is directly tied to its infrastructure, and Royal Air Maroc is expanding. The airline plans to reach 200 aircraft by 2027 and relies on plane deliveries. The increase in flights to São Paulo will be possible thanks to the addition of a new Boeing 787 to the fleet.

The airline is also already keeping an eye on the opportunities that will arise in the coming years, as Morocco will host the 2030 World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal. Noting that a tournament of this scale “accelerates” projects in host countries, he says the event could also lead to faster plans for Brazil and result in greater demand. Regardless of what happens over the next five years, the executive says the company cannot stand still. “In this industry, if you don’t grow, you disappear,” he says.

Read more:
Emirates to start daily Rio service
Royal Air Maroc to increase São Paulo flights
Qatar Airways moves up São Paulo flight expansion

Translated by Guilherme Miranda

Marcos Carrieri/ANBA

Supplied

Expert links growth to South America’s demand for connectivity.
