The event was organized by the National Association for Fertilizer Promotion (ANDA).

Carlos Cogo, managing partner of Cogo Intelligence in Agribusiness, noted that productivity and competitiveness in Brazilian crops are increasing, with farms achieving up to three harvests per year of different crops. This boosts production but also raises the need for fertilization. He estimated a planted area of approximately 90 million hectares and a fertilizer consumption of 49 million metric tons this year.

“Record production is no longer a surprise for me—one record follows another. What stands out is growing 2% in area and almost 3% per year in productivity over 30 years,” said Cogo. He also noted that Brazil is expected to continue relying on Russia as its main fertilizer supplier, accounting for 30% of all imports. The country depends on foreign markets to fertilize its land and counts Arab countries, such as Morocco, among its main trading partners. Of all the fertilizers consumed in Brazil, 85% are imported.

Renata Cardarelli, Grain and Fertilizer Editor at Argus Media, presented an overview of the global fertilizer market during the panel. She noted that Egypt, a major producer and supplier to Brazil, is reducing its production this year due to lower availability of natural gas, a key input for fertilizer production in the North African country.

The panel moderator, ANDA advisor and CEO of Adufértil, Gustavo Zaitune, attributed the increase in field productivity to fertilizer use. “We cannot forget that, despite organomineral biofertilizers, NPKs (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium) will certainly remain the main driver of plant nutrition. In this sense, local production efforts are important, but imports will still constitute the majority and must be considered in terms of ports, railways, and highways,” he said.

Cogo indicated that crop productivity and fertilizer demand will continue to grow in Brazil in the coming years. He cited, for example, the increase in planted areas and corn consumption. The biofuels market is expected to generate BRL 1 trillion (USD 183 billion) in revenue over the next 10 years due to sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production, biodiesel, and higher ethanol content in gasoline.

Read more:
Credit, costs pressure Brazil’s agribusiness

Translated by Guilherme Miranda

Supplied

Brazilian crops can have up to three harvests per year on the same land, thus increasing the need for fertilizers.
