S\u00e3o Paulo \u2013 This year, tomato should generate greater income in the city of Itapeva and surrounding areas, in the interior of the state of S\u00e3o Paulo. According to figures disclosed by the S\u00e3o Paulo state government, the value of production in the region covered by the Itapeva Rural Development Office (EDR), which includes the cities of Apia\u00ed, Barra do Chap\u00e9u, Bom Sucesso de Itarar\u00e9, Buri, Guapiara, Itaber\u00e1, Ita\u00f3ca, Itapirapu\u00e3 Paulista, Itarar\u00e9, Nova Campina, Ribeira, Ribeir\u00e3o Branco, Riversul and Taquariva\u00ed should reach 444 million Brazilian reals (US$ 251 million).<\/p>\n
The growth in income should reach 94% over the previous year, when 228.8 million reals (US$ 129 million) were made. The region is in the southeast of the state of S\u00e3o Paulo, where Brazil\u2019s largest table tomato crops may be found and, according to agronomist Vandir Daniel da Silva, from the Integral Technical Assistance Coordination (Cati) of Itapeva, Vandir Daniel da Silva, the main cultivation areas are Apia\u00ed, Ribeir\u00e3o Branco, Guapiara and Itapeva.<\/p>\n

The tomato cultivated in the region is taken to distributors in S\u00e3o Paulo, Campinas, Presidente Prudente and Curitiba, said Silva. The product is not exported. \u201cIt is highly perishable, so cannot travel long distances,\u201d said the agronomist. In fact, Brazil almost doesn\u2019t export fresh tomatoes. This year up to September, for example, the country shipped abroad just US$ 27,000 in tomatoes, against US$ 648,000 in the same period in 2010. In the wet season, for example, the culture faces problems like pests, as moths like to lay their eggs in tomatoes.<\/p>\n
According to figures disclosed by the Agricultural Economics Institute (IEA-APTA) of the Agriculture and Supply Secretariat of the State of S\u00e3o Paulo, tomatoes represent 25.87% of agricultural production in Itapeva and surrounding areas. In total, agriculture and livestock production should generate 1.7 billion reals (US$ 961 million) in the region. Last year, tomatoes participated with 18.26% and total production generated 1.2 billion reals (US$ 678 million).<\/p>\n
The average price per 25 kilogram box of tomatoes produced in the state in 2010 was 20.02 Brazilian reals (US$ 11.30), according to the study, and should reach 31.53 reals (US$ 17.80) in 2011.
