S\u00e3o Paulo \u2013 Researchers and technical representatives from Oman received training last week on pest management practices used in Brazil for coconut trees. The six-member group was hosted by the Coastal Tablelands Unit of Brazil\u2019s state-run agricultural center Embrapa<\/a> in Aracaju, Sergipe state, where they were trained by specialists in managing the South American palm weevil (Rhynchophorus palmarum<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Embrapa researchers Adenir Teodoro, \u00c9lio Guzzo, and Aldom\u00e1rio Negrisoli, specialists in agricultural pests, led the training in Brazil\u2014a follow-up to a visit two of them made to Oman last year. The program was also the result of a partnership coordinated through the Brazilian Cooperation Agency (ABC), which is linked to Brazil\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Embrapa, the goal is to adapt some of the pest control technologies used in Brazil for managing the red palm weevil (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus<\/em>) found in Oman. The insect is considered the main pest affecting date palms in Oman and other Middle Eastern countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The visit also covered other topics, such as opportunities for technical and scientific cooperation between Embrapa and researchers from Oman, in collaboration with the Arab country\u2019s Ministry of Agriculture. The mission to Brazil included presentations of research from both sides, visits to laboratories and experimental fields, and discussions on potential partnerships for joint projects focused on managing the red palm weevil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In material released by Embrapa, Teodoro explained that the red palm weevil is considered the world\u2019s most destructive pest of palm trees, being far more aggressive than the South American palm weevil found in Brazil. The researcher emphasized that the exchange of knowledge with Oman should strengthen pest control in the Arab country while also helping Brazil prepare in case the pest is ever detected in its plantations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rashid Al Shidi, Oman\u2019s director of Agricultural Defense, who was part of the delegation visiting Brazil, said that the main goal of his country\u2019s government, through its Ministry of Agriculture, is to advance its agricultural development by building alliances with Brazilian research institutions in search of effective control measures for its most significant crop pests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
