Business leaders demonstrated their willingness to have a greater voice in the climate agenda on Wednesday (15) at the seminar “Pre-COP30: The Role of the Private Sector in the Climate Agenda,” organized by Brazilian industry lobby CNI in Brasília.

In a session of the preparatory ministerial meeting for the COP on Tuesday (14), one of the key agreements was the urgency of implementing global adaptation plans that deliver effective results against climate change. Speaking at CNI’s seminar on this need for implementation, Dan Ioschpe, COP30 High-Level Climate Champion, highlighted the role of the private sector in this. He noted that countries are realizing that what was agreed upon in the Paris Agreement requires non-governmental actors for implementation.

Bomtempo, from CNI: COP needs a strong private sector

Davi Bomtempo, Superintendent of Environment and Sustainability at CNI, speaking at the Brasília meeting, also addressed the implementation-focused COP. “This is a COP that needs the private sector—a strong, engaged private sector,” he said. CNI created the Sustainable Business COP (SB COP) initiative, through which it brought together the global business community and presented private sector demands for COP30. The recommendations document was submitted to the conference presidency. SB COP will also showcase sustainable business cases at the conference and present a document on the private sector’s legacy for Brazil at COP30.

A total of 23 proposals were presented to COP30 by the private sector, including the goal of tripling installed renewable energy capacity by 2030, aligning global carbon markets, accelerating the energy transition, promoting financial support to address the climate crisis, and strengthening sustainable value chains. The private sector expects its agenda to be discussed at COP30. The conference is led by governments and coordinated by the United Nations.

Opening the day, CNI president Ricardo Alban emphasized the importance of the private sector in climate matters. He questioned how a series of COPs could have taken place without a mechanism for private sector participation. “How can we have a series of COPs discussing these issues and not have a way to be complicit in the process, since we’re going to be the ones bearing the greatest responsibilities? It doesn’t make sense. The best way to achieve cohesion, participation, convergence, and complementarity is to be complicit,” he said, subsequently addressing the creation of SB COP as a way to expand companies’ contributions to the discussions.

Angela Martins and Fernanda Baltazar: Participation in the seminar

A range of experts and authorities took part in the CNI discussion, including Hailton Madureira, Executive Secretary of the Ministry of Cities; Ricardo Mussa, chair of the Sustainable Business COP; Alex Carvalho, president of Pará state’s export federation Fiepa; Marcelo Thomé, president of the Amazônia+21 Institute; among others.
