S\u00e3o Paulo \u2013 The Palestinian Institute of Public Diplomacy (PIPD) has launched in Brazil the platform Communicating Palestine<\/a> a guide to presenting Palestine\u2019s story ethically and responsibly. Aimed at journalists and other professionals involved in narratives about Palestine, the site is available in Portuguese, the second language added to the project after English. The launch took place on Friday (28) at the Arab-Brazilian Chamber of Commerce<\/strong> (ABCC<\/a>) in S\u00e3o Paulo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a conversation with Brazilian journalists, PIPD<\/a> co-director, Palestinian lawyer Rula Shadeed, said that developing the guide took about four years, and that it is now being released in its fifth year. The inaugural English version was launched around a month ago. Versions in Spanish, Arabic, and French are also in the process of being implemented, bringing the total to five languages. Shadeed also mentioned plans for a Chinese version in the next two to three years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PIPD is an independent non-governmental organization, based in Palestine with a presence in Brazil, that advocates for Palestine\u2019s liberation from colonialism. Among the goals of the Communicating Palestine platform are combating misinformation and preserving the historical narrative as it truly happened. \u201cThe colonizers worked hard to erase and silence voices, histories, identity, and culture,\u201d Shadeed, trained in International Criminal Law, told journalists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the guide\u2019s recommendations is that Palestinians should always be heard by those covering Palestine. \u201cYou even find people sympathetic to Palestine who, instead of seeking out Palestinians\u2014many of whom are experts capable of telling their own stories, explaining their reality, describing daily life, detailing the laws imposed on them, or professionals like lawyers, journalists, architects, artists, among many others who could share firsthand their experiences of both peace and struggle\u2014end up looking for someone from outside to speak about it,\u201d Shadeed explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The platform has several focus areas, including combating \u201cbothsidesism,\u201d where a communicator equates the parties while ignoring the imbalance between the powerful and the oppressed; challenging the clich\u00e9 of terrorism, in which the term is used to delegitimize socialist movements, national liberation efforts, and others; and fighting the use of stereotypes that portray Palestinians as victims, fighters, violent, inflexible, or heroic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The guide was launched for the press by Shadeed alongside Badra El Cheikh, PIPD\u2019s Advocacy and Campaigns Officer in Brazil. After the meeting, a debate on narratives about the Palestinian people was held, also organized by the Palestinian institute at the ABCC headquarters. Participants included Shadeed and Brazilian writer Milton Hatoum, with moderation by publisher Laura de Pietro. ABCC Vice President of Marketing Silvia Antibas attended both the press conference and the debate. The event was organized by PIPD, with support from the ABCC and Tabla publisher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
