S\u00e3o Paulo \u2013 The foundation stone has been laid for Mauritania\u2019s first hybrid power plant, the state-run Mauritanian Information Agency (AMI) reported on Thursday (25). The development will be located in the Toujounine district, in the northern part of the national capital, Nouakchott.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The plant will have 220 megawatts of capacity, with multiple energy sources, such as solar voltaic and wind, as well as a battery energy storage system. The AMI reported that this configuration will ensure continuous power generation, support electricity production, meet peak demand, and enhance grid stability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The facility will be connected to the Mauritanian Electricity Company (Somelec)\u2019s national electricity grid through a substation. The project is funded by several private institutions, including IWA Energy, the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the African Development Bank (AfDB), and the Mauritanian People\u2019s Bank (BPM). After a 15-year concession, full ownership will be transferred to Somelec.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The foundation stone was laid by Mauritania\u2019s president Mohamed Ould Sheikh El Ghazouani as part of the 65th National Independence Day celebrations during a solemnity attended by authorities and guests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
